The Archdeacon of Cornwall is a senior cleric in the Church of England Diocese of Truro. History and composition The archdeaconry of Cornwall was created in the Diocese of Exeter in the late 11th century. The area and the archdeacon remained part of that diocese until 15 December 1876 when the Diocese of Truro was established. The archdeaconry was then divided on 21 May 1878 to create the new Archdeaconry of Bodmin. Today, the archdeaconry of Cornwall consists of the deaneries of Carnmarth North, Carnmarth South, Kerrier, Penwith, Powder, Pydar and St Austell (Powder deanery includes the Isles of Scilly). William Short, DD (c. 1760 – 23 May 1826) was the Archdeacon of Cornwall from 1807 until his death. Short was born in Exeter and educated at Christ Church, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1778 at age 18, and graduated B.A. in 1782. An archdeacon is a senior clergy position in the Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, Syriac Orthodox Church, Anglican Communion, St Thomas Christians, Eastern Orthodox Church, Eastern Orthodox churches and some other Christian denominations, above that of most clergy and below a bishop. In the High Middle Ages it was the most senior diocesan position below a bishop in the Catholic Church.
