George Moe
George Cecil Rawle Moe CHB (12 March 1932 – 16 August 2004) was a Barbadian judge and politician. Early life He was born in Barbados to Cecil and Odessa (née Marshall) Moe and educated at Harrison College, Oxford University and Columbia University, New York, where he was awarded L.L.M. He studied law and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in London. Career Moe began his legal career in his native Barbados, where his positions including Magistrate, Acting Assistant Legal Draughtsman, and Crown Counsel and Senior Crown Counsel in the Attorney General's Chambers. In the early 1970s he served as Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations. He then went on to serve as Attorney General, Minister of Legal Affairs, and Minister of External Affairs under Errol Barrow from 1971 to 1976. The Order of Barbados is a national Order of honours and decorations for Barbados. History The first Order of Barbados was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II by letters patent dated 25 July 1980. With Barbados becoming a republic on 30 November 2021, a new Order of Barbados came into force that was established with the Barbados National Honors and Decorations Act 2021 by the Parliament of Barbados on 28 October 2021, and which replaced the former Order of Barbados that existed under the monarchy. The Order of the Companions of Honour is an order of the Commonwealth realms. It was founded on 4 June 1917 by King George V as a reward for outstanding achievements. Founded on the same date as the Order of the British Empire, it is sometimes regarded as the junior order to the Order of Merit. The order was originally intended to be conferred upon a limited number of persons for whom this special distinction seemed to be the most appropriate form of recognition, constituting an honour disassociated either from the acceptance of title or the classification of merit. George Brown (Belizean Judge)
Sir George Noel Brown (13 June 1942 – 26 July 2007) was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Belize from 1991 to 1998, the second native-born Belizean to sit in that position. Career Brown served the judiciary for more than four decades, rising up through the ranks. He began as a lay magistrate, and after qualifying as a crown counsel joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. He later became the Solicitor General of Belize. He served as acting Chief Justice in 1985–1986, and was named Chief Justice in 1991. His tenure was marked by conflict with the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council over the issue of capital punishment; of the twenty death sentences he handed down in his latter years, the Privy Council granted a stay of execution in all cases which were appealed. Albert Staine
Sir Albert Llewellyn Staine (4 July 1928 – 1987) was a Belizean judge. He was Director of Public Prosecutions in 1969. He was one of the founding members of the Belize Audubon Society that year. He was named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1978. He was named Chief Justice of Belize in 1977. He was the first native of Belize to become CJ. At the time of his appointment, Belize was still a British colony; it would become independent while he was still on the bench. He served in that position until 1981, and was succeeded by George Moe of Barbados the following year. He was knighted in 1984.
