George Mills (footballer)
George Robert Mills (born 29 December 1908 in Deptford, died 15 July 1970) was an English footballer, principally for Chelsea. He signed for Chelsea as an amateur in 1929 from Bromley and stayed at the club for the rest of his career. He was a prolific goal scorer in his time there, notching 125 goals in 239 games. Despite often being overlooked by more glamorous, but less reliable, forwards such as Hughie Gallacher and Joe Bambrick, he remained loyal to the club. In his debut season, Mills scored 14 goals in 20 games for Chelsea, helping them achieve promotion to the First Division. His best season was in 1936-37, when he scored 22 goals in 32 appearances, which earned him an England call-up. He won three international caps for England and scored three goals, all of which came in a 5–1 win against Northern Ireland on 23 October 1937. George Mills (politician)
George Mills (January 17, 1876 – August 17, 1948) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1920 to 1926 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government and opposition. Political career Mills ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in a by-election held in the Athabasca electoral district on June 3, 1920. He stood as the Liberal candidate in a straight fight against former MLA and Independent candidate James Cornwall. Mills won the race with almost 70% of the popular vote. Mills ran for a second term a year later in the 1921 general election. Mills was projected to be returned unopposed, however Conservative candidate John Angelo filed nomination papers at the last minute. Mills was returned with a landslide. George Mills (shipbuilder)
George Mills (1808–1881) was a 19th-century Scottish shipbuilder, journalist and novelist. Life He was born 13 April 1808, the son of William Mills, a successful merchant trading between American and Britain (with bases in Liverpool and Greenock, who was later Lord Provost of Glasgow. He studied at Glasgow University, but did not graduate, instead becoming a Manager of the Leith branch of his father's shipping company in 1827 (aged only 19). He organised steam packets between Leith and London from an office at Newhaven harbour. In 1833/34 Mills went into independent business with a partner, Charles Wood, creating "Wood & Mills", based at Littlemills in Bowling west of Glasgow. Here they made iron-hull steamers and canal boats. Charles Wood dissolved the partnership around 1840 to set up alone, and Mills himself abandoned shipbuilding in 1844 due to a downturn in the market. George Mills (1792/93 – 28 January 1824) was a British sculptor, engraver and medallist. Mills exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1816-1823 and gained three gold medals from the Royal Society of Arts. He produced a number of coin patterns while employed at the Soho Mint. George William Mills
George William Mills (1876 – 21 January 1933) was a British politician, who served on London County Council. Born in Whitechapel, Mills received an elementary education before working a variety of jobs, eventually becoming a poor law officer. He joined the Municipal Employees' Association in 1906, and remained a member when it became part of the National Union of General Workers. From 1911, he served on Poplar Metropolitan Borough Council, and he also chaired the Stepney and Poplar War Pensions Committee from 1924 to 1926. George Ramsay Acland Mills (1 October 1896 – 8 December 1972) was a British preparatory schoolmaster and an author of children's adventure stories. His whimsical tales often revolve around boys' preparatory schools in Great Britain and often involve sports like cricket, pranks, and mysteries, as well as a beloved pet bulldog, Uggles. He was born in Bude, Cornwall and died in Devonshire. Career as an author Mills is listed in the British Library as a "Writer of Tales for Boys". George Pilkington Mills
George Pilkington Mills (8 January 1867 – 8 November 1945) was the dominant English racing cyclist of his generation, and winner of the inaugural Bordeaux–Paris cycle race. He frequently rode from Land's End to John o' Groats, holding the world record time on six occasions between 1886 and 1895. He was a member of the Anfield and North Road cycling clubs. He later won races and broke records as a car racer and motorcycle rider. Air Chief Marshal Sir George Holroyd Mills, (26 March 1902 – 14 April 1971) was a senior Royal Air Force commander. After his retirement from the RAF, Mills served as Black Rod in the Houses of Parliament until 1970. He was also a trustee of the Imperial War Museum. RAF career Mills joined the RAF College at Cranwell as a cadet in 1920 and became one of the earliest graduates of the newly formed College. After graduating he spent a short time at the RAF Depot. Mills was then posted to Mesopotamia flying DH 9As with No. 8 Squadron. He transferred to No. 100 Squadron in 1927 flying Hawker Horsley aircraft. He attended the RAF Staff College in 1935.
