George Matthews (soldier)
Captain George Matthews (1726-1798) was a signer of the 1790 Pennsylvania Constitution, a veteran of the Indian War in 1746, an ensign in the French Indian War in 1756-1764 under Captain Samuel Perry, a captain in the Revolutionary War under Colonel Joseph Armstrong, a justice of the peace in 1785, an Associate Judge, 1791–1794, commissioned by the first Governor of Pennsylvania, Thomas Mifflin, and a church trustee and elder of the Rocky Spring Presbyterian Church. A blacksmith by trade, Captain Matthews was born in Ireland, but resided in Hamilton Township in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, until his death. Matthews served as a representative to the Pennsylvania 1789 Constitutional Conventional and subsequently signed the 1790 Constitution. After problems became apparent with the Constitution of 1776, a campaign to change the Pennsylvania constitution followed. George Matthews (musician)
George Matthews (September 23, 1912 – June 28, 1982) was a jazz trombonist. Career Matthews was adept on tuba, trumpet, and trombone. He received classical training in New York City and played with local dance and jazz bands before joining Tiny Bradshaw's group in the early-1930s. He worked later in the 1930s with Willie Bryant, Louis Armstrong, Chick Webb, and Ella Fitzgerald. After World War II, Matthews worked extensively with Count Basie, then joined Erskine Hawkins's group in the early 1950s. In the 1960s he played with Lucille Dixon and Clark Terry, among others. George Matthews (24 January 1917 – 29 March 2005) was a British communist activist and newspaper editor. Life Born to a wealthy family in Bedfordshire, Matthews was educated at Bedford Modern School, studied agriculture at the University of Reading and joined the Labour Party. In 1938, he secretly joined the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB), while retaining his Labour Party membership. Voitre Marek (30 May 1919, Bítouchov – 27 November 1999, Adelaide), also known as Vojtěch Marek, was an Australian artist. He was born in Czechoslovakia and resident South Australia from 1949. He is known for his surrealist style and religious art, in particular sculptures, some of which are held in churches around Australia. Life in Czechoslovakia Voitre Marek was born on 30 May 1919 in Bítouchov, Czechoslovakia, the eldest of three brothers, to parents Vojtěch Marek and his wife Hermína, née Schinovská. Voitre became an apprentice to a metal engraver in 1935, before going to study at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts between 1939 and 1944, where he met his future wife, Vera Podperova. George Matthews (broadcaster)
George Matthews is the current radio play-by-play announcer for the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL. He was the original radio play-by-play announcer for the Columbus Blue Jackets, a National Hockey League franchise. He held this position since the team's inaugural 2000–01 season through the 2012–2013 season. He hails from Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Entering his 37th season of hockey broadcasting, he is known for his passionate broadcast style and also his penchant for rhyme. He performed limited broadcasting duties during the 2013–2014 season on the Blue Jackets Radio Network through their flagship station WBNS (FM 97.1). In addition to calling play-by-play action, he was also a regular contributor to the "Between the Pipes" radio show that airs weekly on WBNS during the hockey season.
