George Martin (Queensland Politician)
George Martin (1858 – 14 May 1905) was an auctioneer and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Martin was born in Clarence, New South Wales, to parents George Martin and his wife Mary (née McPhee). He spent many years in Ballina where he worked as a farmer and also auctioneer. He moved to Childers around 1900 and continued in those trades. Political career Martin, representing the Labour Party, was the member for Burrum in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1902 until his death three years later. He was also an alderman in Ballina for many years and Mayor of the town twice. Personal life In 1887, Martin married Annie Brown in Ballina and together had two daughters. Burrum was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. History Burrum was created by the Electoral Districts Act of 1887, taking effect at the 1888 elections. It was based on the rural area around Maryborough, Queensland. Burrum was abolished at the 1932 elections, its area being incorporated into the Electoral district of Isis and Electoral district of Wide Bay. Ballina, New South Wales
Ballina () is a town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, and the seat of the Ballina Shire local government area. Ballina's urban population at June 2018 was 26,381. The town lies on the Richmond River and serves as a gateway to Byron Bay. History Ballina is located on the ancestral land of the Bundjalung people, the original inhabitants. Archaeological evidence demonstrates Bundjalung occupation of the region for at least 6000 years. One view suggests that the name Ballina comes from corruption of a clan name for the ''Bullina'' band of the Arakwal. It has been argued that in this tribe's Bundjalung language, meant "place of many oysters". This theory argues that the Aboriginal name reminded the predominantly Irish settlers of "Ballina", so the name's origin could be an accidental or deliberate corruption. Bundaberg Region
The Bundaberg Region is a local government area in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia, about north of Brisbane, the state capital. It is centred on the city of Bundaberg, and also contains a significant rural area surrounding the city. It was created in 2008 from a merger of the City of Bundaberg with the Shires of Burnett, Isis and Kolan. The Bundaberg Regional Council, which administers the Region, has an estimated operating budget of A$89 million. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. Nicholas Tooth
Nicholas Edward Nelson Tooth (7 September 1844 – 17 August 1913) was a foundry owner and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Tooth was born at Sydney to John Tooth and his wife Elizabeth (née Newnham) and was educated at Castle's private school in Calder House, Sydney. He began his working career as a clerk with the Bank of New South Wales before unsuccessfully trying his hand at pastoral pursuits at Widgee Station. He then leased Kolan Station and was a stock-drover before becoming an agent and auctioneer in Maryborough. For two years he was a farmer in Maryborough before joining Walkers Foundry as a clerk. He then became a senior partner at the Vulcan Foundry in Maryborough. The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s).
