The George Main Stakes, is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race run under Weight for Age conditions, over a distance of 1600 metres at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, Australia in September. Total prize money for the race is A$1,000,000. History The race is named after George Main, a former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club. Main lived with his wife Mary on ''Retreat'', a grazing property at Illabo, west of Cootamundra on the southwest slopes of New South Wales. He bred racehorses and ran sheep. The winner of the George Main is exempt from a ballot on the Epsom Handicap, and horses who run well often head for the Epsom. Anamoe
Anamoe (foaled 16 November 2018) is a nine-time Group 1 winning Australian thoroughbred racehorse. Background A homebred for Godolphin, Anamoe is a half-brother to Irish stakes-winner Anamba and is out of the 2007 Australasian Oaks winner Anamato. Racing career 2020/21: two-year-old season Anamoe finished fifth in his race debut in the Listed Debutant Stakes at Caulfield in October 2020, before opening his account in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes at Sandown a month later. Winning jockey Damien Oliver said after the win, "That was a nice effort. He's a nice horse with ability". Kingston Town (horse)
Kingston Town (31 August 1976 – March 1991) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won three Cox Plates and 11 other Group One races and was the 1980 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year. Background He was by Bletchingly, later a Leading sire in Australia, his dam, Ada Hunter (GER) was by Andrea Mantegna (FR). Ada Hunter was the dam of nine foals, but Private Thoughts (a brother to Kingston Town) was her only other stakes winner. She was later exported to the United States. Kingston Town was bred by David Hains, who sold a share in him to G. Monsborough and his wife after the horse failed to reach his reserve as a yearling. Racing career He was trained throughout his career by Tommy Smith and ridden in 25 of his 30 wins by Malcolm Johnston. Emancipation (horse)
Emancipation (foaled 1979) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. By Bletchingly, Emancipation was a grey, like her dam, Ammo Girl, and her damsire, Gunsynd. She was bred by Mark Hough, in New South Wales, after her dam was purchased from trainer Tommy Smith for just $1,700 due to her unsound conformation and her breeding (her sire was standing at a fee of only $1,500 at the time). Her breeder was only interested in her as a broodmare, and approached her trainer, Neville Begg, to recommend someone who would lease her for racing purposes. Racing career Unraced at two, Emancipation raced only at three and four, and won 19 of her 28 starts. These included six Group One wins - all in Sydney. At three, she won 10 of her 13 starts, and, in the autumn, defeated Manikato in the George Ryder Stakes before winning the Doncaster Handicap. Vo Rogue
Vo Rogue (12 Nov 1983 - 7 May 2012) was an Australian Racing Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse. He was sired by American-bred Ivor Prince whose racing career ended from injury after just two starts. Ivor Prince was a son of the British champion Sir Ivor who won the 1968 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby. His American damsire, Dignitas, was a multiple stakes winner in the United States and was a son of the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Round Table. Vo Rogue was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2019. Vo Rogue was a successful front-running racehorse who thrilled Australian racegoers by setting up massive leads in his races, and defying the opposition to catch him. Shogun Lodge
Shogun Lodge (25 September 1996 – 8 November 2003) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse by American sire Grand Lodge. Shogun Lodge won three Group One races, and remarkably ran 2nd in a further 12 Group 1 races. On 8 November 2003, Shogun Lodge collapsed and died while competing in the Emirates Stakes. It was later revealed he died of a heart attack after suffering a lung haemorrhage during the race. Lonhro
Lonhro (foaled 10 December 1998) was a champion Australian racehorse who is now standing at stud. Nicknamed "The Black Flash", he was from the first crop of the champion Octagonal out of the Group One-placed Shadea (by Straight Strike), who also produced the Group One winner Niello (a younger, full-brother to Lonhro). Lonhro raced from two to five years of age and won 26 races, including 25 stakes races, ranging in distance from 1,100 to 2,000 metres. These included 11 Group One wins and 18 wins at weight-for-age. He was bred and owned by Woodlands Stud and trained by John Hawkes. Lonhro's name is based on the stock exchange code of the London Rhodesian Mining and Land Company, LONRHO. More Joyous (foaled 20 August 2006) is an Australian trained and New Zealand bred Thoroughbred racemare, trained by Gai Waterhouse, who has won eight Group 1 races. Pedigree More Joyous is by the leading Southern Halo sire More Than Ready, and from the Australian Oaks winning Sunday Silence mare Sunday Joy. Racing career More Joyous made her debut in January 2009 by winning a two-year -ld fillies handicap by five and a half lengths. Winx (foaled 14 September 2011) is a retired champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. Between May 2015 and her retirement in April 2019, she won 33 consecutive races including 25 Group 1s (a world record), at distances ranging from 1300 metres (roughly furlongs) to 2200 metres (roughly 11 furlongs). In the World's Best Racehorse Rankings, she was the second-ranked filly or mare in 2015, improving in 2016 to become both the world's top-ranked filly or mare and the world's top-ranked turf horse. She retained this ranking in 2017 and in 2018 was co-ranked as the best horse in the world.
