George Mackenzie Of Rosehaugh
Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh (1636 – May 8, 1691) was a Scottish lawyer, Lord Advocate, essayist and legal writer. Early life Mackenzie, who was born in Dundee, was the son of Sir Simon Mackenzie of Lochslin (died c. 1666) and Elizabeth Bruce, daughter of the Reverend Peter Bruce, minister of St Leonard's, and Principal of St Leonard's Hall in the University of St Andrews. He was a grandson of Kenneth, Lord Mackenzie of Kintail and a nephew of George Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Seaforth. He was educated at the King's College, University of Aberdeen (which he entered in 1650), the University of St Andrews, and the University of Bourges in France. Career Mackenzie was elected to the Faculty of Advocates in 1659, and spoke in defence at the trial of Archibald Campbell, Marquis of Argyll in 1661. George Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Cromartie FRS (1630–1714), known as Sir George Mackenzie, 2nd Baronet from 1654 to 1685 and as The Viscount of Tarbat from 1685 to 1703, was a Scottish statesman. Life He was born at Innerteil, near Kinghorn, Fife, in 1630, was eldest son of Sir John Mackenzie of Tarbat – grandson of Sir Roderick MacKenzie and great-grandson of Colin Mackenzie of Kintail, and nephew of the first Lord Mackenzie of Kintail, Ross-shire, the progenitor of the Mackenzies, earls of Seaforth. George Mackenzie, 2nd Earl Of Seaforth
George Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Seaforth (died 1651) was a Highland clan chief and Scottish nobleman, who played an equivocating role in Scotland in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Origins Mackenzie was the son of Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Lord Mackenzie of Kintail (died 1611), and Isobel, the daughter of Sir Gilbert Ogilvie of Powrie. The Mackenzies were a clan from Ross-shire that had risen to prominence in the 15th century during the disintegration of the Lordship of the Isles. George Mackenzie (c.1662–1760) of Inchcoulter, Balconie, Kiltearn, Ross-shire, was a Scottish politician who sat in the Parliament of Scotland from 1704 to 1707, and in the British House of Commons from 1710 to 1713. Mackenzie was the eldest son of Alexander Mackenzie of Inchcoulter and his first wife. Katherine Mackenzie, daughter of William Mackenzie of Belmathudie, Knockbairn, Ross- shire. Sir George Mackenzie, 4th Baronet
Sir George Mackenzie, 4th Baronet (c. 1702–1748), of Cromarty and Grandvale, was a Scottish politician who sat in the British House of Commons from 1729 to 1734. Mackenzie was the eldest son of Sir Kenneth Mackenzie, 3rd Baronet, of Cromarty by his second wife. He succeeded his father to the baronetcy on 13 September 1728. Mackenzie also succeeded his father as Member of Parliament for Cromartyshire being returned at a by-election on 25 March 1729. He was an independent, voting with the Administration on the army in 1732, but against them on the Excise Bill in 1733 and the repeal of the Septennial Act in 1734. In 1734, there was no election at Cromartyshire, which was an alternating constituency. Mackenzie became bankrupt and sold his estate of Cromarty in 1741. George Mackenzie, 3rd Earl Of Cromartie
George Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Cromartie (c. 1703 – 28 September 1766) was a Scottish nobleman. Life He succeeded his father John, the 2nd earl, in February 1731. In 1745, he joined Charles Edward Stuart and he served with the Jacobites until April 1746 when he was taken prisoner in Sutherland after the Battle of Littleferry. He was tried and sentenced to death, but he obtained a conditional pardon although his peerage was forfeited, allegedly because his wife was heavily pregnant. He was however reduced to extreme poverty, because the family estates and rights were confiscated in 1748. He died on 28 September 1766 in Soho Square, London, having never gone north of the River Trent again, in keeping with the terms of his pardon. George Mackenzie (1741–1787)
George Mackenzie (1741 – 4 June 1787) was a British officer who commanded the 2nd battalion of the 73rd Highlanders during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. Life Mackenzie was born in Tarbat House in Ross-shire in Scotland. He was one of the twelve children of George Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Cromartie. His father was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death for raising a Jacobite regiment, but then pardoned. He managed to avoid any problems because he was only five at the time of his father's trial. He joined the army and work his way up the ranks of the Royal Regiment until he was placed in commanded of the 2nd battalion of the 73rd Highlanders in 1778. Vice-Admiral George Mackenzie (died 1780) was a Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-Chief, The Nore from 1774 to 1775. Naval career Mackenzie became commanding officer of the frigate in July 1745 and then of the frigate in August 1745. Promoted to captain in January 1746, he commanded, successively, the frigate , the sixth-rate and the fourth-rate and saw action in the Louisbourg Expedition. Sir George Steuart Mackenzie, 7th Baronet FRS FRSE FSA (22 June 1780–26 October 1848) was a Scottish geologist, chemist and agricultural improver. Life The only son of Major General Sir Alexander Mackenzie of Coul (d.1796), a General in the Bengal Army, by his wife Katharine Ramsay (d.1806), daughter of Robert Ramsay of Camno, he was born on 22 June 1780. He was tutored privately then spent one year at Edinburgh's High School (1795/6). He then studied sciences at the University of Edinburgh. Biography Mackenzie was educated mainly in Aberdeen, at the Aberdeen Grammar School and the Marischal College, University of Aberdeen; but he studied in Rouen, France, and Stettin, Prussia, from 1853 to 1855..
