George Kunkel (theatre Manager)
George Kunkel (January 21, 1823 – January 25, 1885) was an American Theater manager, theatre manager, impresario, actor, singer-songwriter, and playwright. His son, George Kunkel (actor, born 1866), George Kunkel, was also an entertainer who worked as an opera singer and a silent film and stage actor. As an entertainer, George Kunkel was a leading performer in minstrel shows of the 19th century, and was particularly associated with the role of Uncle Tom; a character he portrayed in blackface. After initially working as a printer in Philadelphia, he began his stage career in 1844 performing with the Virginia Minstrels, Virginia Serenaders. A talented bass (voice type), bass vocalist, he wrote many of his own songs as well as music for other minstrel entertainers. George Kunkel
George Kunkel (March 10, 1893 – May 18, 1965) was an American lawyer and politician from Pennsylvania who served as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania Senate for the 15th district from 1937 to 1941. Early life and education Kunkel was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and went to the public schools. He graduated from the Harrisburg Academy and Franklin & Marshall College in 1915. He attended law school at Harvard Law School from 1915 to 1917. He attended Officer's Training Camp at Fort Niagara in New York (state), New York and was commissioned second lieutenant in September 1917. He was sent to Fort George G. Meade, Camp Meade in Maryland and assigned to the 30th Machine Gun Battalion. He spent nine months at Camp Meade then in July 1918 was assigned to the 79th Infantry Division (United States), 79th Infantry Division of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). The Baltimore Museum and Gallery of Fine Arts, sometimes referred to as the Baltimore Museum Theatre or simply the Baltimore Museum, was a theatre and dime museum in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, located at the corners of Baltimore and Calvert streets. It was originally the second location of Rubens Peale's Baltimore Museum which occupied the second floor of the building beginning in January 1830. In 1834, it was renamed the Baltimore Museum and Gallery of Fine Arts after the enterprise was taken over by Edmund Peale, the nephew of Rubens. Edmund operated the business until it was purchased by P. T. Barnum in 1845. In 1847, the building underwent a major reconstruction to turn it into a proper theatre venue. The minstrel show, also called minstrelsy, was an American form of racist theatrical entertainment developed in the early 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that depicted people specifically of African descent. The shows were performed by mostly white people wearing blackface make-up for the purpose of playing the role of black people. There were also some African-American performers and black-only minstrel groups that formed and toured. John Hodges (July 28, 1821RICE, Edward L., ''Monarchs of Minstrelsy'', 1910 – April 23, 1891); known as Cool White, was an American blackface Minstrel show, minstrel entertainer, who wrote or popularized the song "Buffalo Gals", published by him in 1844 under the title "Lubly Fan".
