George Joseph Cooper
George Joseph Cooper (1844 – 7 October 1909) was a British Liberal Party politician in London. He qualified as a doctor in 1867 and became a GP with a house and dispensary at the corner of Reverdy Road and Southwark Park Road in Bermondsey, living there from 1881 with his wife, eight children, and a servant. When the London County Council (LCC) was created in 1889, Cooper was elected as a councillor for Bermondsey, standing for the Progressive Party, the municipal organisation of the Liberals. He was re-elected five times, holding the seat at the 1904 elections. At the 1906 general election he was elected as the member of parliament (MP) for Bermondsey, defeating the sitting Conservative MP Henry Cust. He then resigned from the LCC. Whilst an MP he voted in favour of the 1908 Women's Enfranchisement Bill. He died in 1909, aged 65. According to his son, he was killed by overwork relating to the People's Budget. The 1909 Bermondsey by-election was a by-election held on 28 October 1909 for the British House of Commons United Kingdom constituencies, constituency of Bermondsey (UK Parliament constituency), Bermondsey in South East London. John Molesworth Thomas Dumphreys (24 December 1844 – 18 December 1925) was a British Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician. He was elected Member of Parliament for Bermondsey (UK Parliament constituency), Bermondsey in a 1909 Bermondsey by-election, 1909 by-election, but weeks later lost the seat to the Liberals at the January 1910 United Kingdom general election, January 1910 general election. Dumphreys was born in Bermondsey in 1844. Of humble origins, he worked as a journeyman leather dresser. He was active in local politics for most of his adult life, being elected to the Borough Council, the School Board and County Council. He stood in Birmingham West (UK Parliament constituency), Birmingham West in 1885, against Joseph Chamberlain, on a Fair Trade platform. He was unusual in being a "Conservative working man." The January 1910 United Kingdom general election was held from 15 January to 10 February 1910. The government called the election in the midst of a constitutional crisis caused by the rejection of the People's Budget by the Conservative-dominated House of Lords, in order to get a mandate to pass the budget. The general election resulted in a hung parliament, with the Conservative Party led by Arthur Balfour and their Liberal Unionist allies receiving the most votes, but the Liberals led by H. H. Asquith winning the most seats, returning two more MPs than the Conservatives. Asquith's government remained in power with the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party, led by John Redmond. Another general election was soon held in December. The Labour Party, led by Arthur Henderson, returned 40 MPs. Independent Labour Party
The Independent Labour Party (ILP) was a British political party of the left, established in 1893 at a conference in Bradford, after local and national dissatisfaction with the Liberals' apparent reluctance to endorse working-class candidates, representing the interests of the majority. A sitting independent MP and prominent union organiser, Keir Hardie, became its first chairman. Alfred Salter
Alfred Salter (16 June 1873 – 24 August 1945) was a British medical practitioner and Labour Party politician. Early life Salter was born in Greenwich in 1873, the son of Walter Hookway Salter and Elizabeth Tester. Following education at The John Roan School, Greenwich, he went on to study medicine at Guy's Hospital, London. He qualified in 1896 and in the following year was awarded the Golding-Bird gold medal and scholarship in public health, and the Gull research scholarship in pathology. He was made house physician and resident obstetric physician at Guy's and was appointed as bacteriologist to what later became the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine. In 1898 he became a resident at the Methodist Settlement in Bermondsey, an area of south-east London alongside the River Thames, then an area of "poverty that is stark and staring" and some of the most appalling slums in London.
