George Jeffcoat
George Edward Jeffcoat (December 24, 1913 – October 13, 1978), was a professional baseball pitcher who played in the major leagues for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves from 1936 to 1943. Jeffcoat was the last player in the Dodgers franchise to wear jersey number 42 before Jackie Robinson. He wore the jersey during only the 1939 season. Jeffcoat's younger brother, Hal Jeffcoat, also played in the major leagues as an outfielder and pitcher, and his nephew Harold George Jeffcoat pitched in the minor leagues. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. The Tulsa Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and play in the ECHL.
