George Howes (footballer)
George Albert Howes (5 January 1906 – 31 July 1993) was an English professional footballer who played as a right-half. Born in Jarrow, County Durham, he began his footballing career with his hometown club before joining Football League Second Division side Barnsley in the summer of 1928. He spent two seasons with the Yorkshire-based club but did not make a senior appearance for them. In May 1930, Howes moved to Third Division North outfit Nelson on a free transfer. He made his professional debut on 30 August 1930 in the 4–5 defeat to Rochdale at Spotland Stadium. He appeared in three of the first five matches of the 1930–31 season, but then spent five weeks out of the team. Howes returned to Nelson's starting line-up for the 2–4 loss away at Crewe Alexandra on 18 October 1930. He retained his place in the side for the remainder of the season, as Nelson finished bottom of the division and failed in their application for re-election to the Football League. George Howes (entomologist)
William George Howes (4 December 1879 – 20 February 1946) was a New Zealand entomologist and businessman. Early life Howes was born in 1879 at Southbridge. He was one of five surviving children of Cecilia Brown and William Howes, a post office clerk and accountant from England. His elder sister Edith, who would become a writer and educationalist, was born in 1872 before the family migrated to New Zealand. Career Howes authored scientific papers on entomology, concentrating on New Zealand Lepidoptera, and described numerous species new to science. The species '' Molophilus howesi'' was named in his honour. Howes was a member of a number of organisations including the Royal Entomological Society, Linnean Society of London, American Entomological Society, the Otago Chamber of Commerce, New Zealand Institute, Otago Acclimatisation Society where he sat on the council, and the Dunedin Naturalists Field Club for which he was president for many years. George Howes (Vermont Treasurer)
George Howes (November 14, 1814 – January 30, 1892) was a Montpelier, Vermont businessman and political figure who served as Vermont State Treasurer. Biography George Howes was born in Montpelier, Vermont on November 14, 1814, the son of Martha and Joseph Howes (d. 1863). He was educated in Montpelier, and in 1834 began a business career as a merchant in partnership with Elisha P. Jewett. In addition, he served in local offices including justice of the peace. In 1841 Howes began a banking career as cashier of the Bank of Montpelier (later the Montpelier National Bank), a post he held until 1858. Howes was the successful Whig nominee for State Treasurer in 1847, succeeding Jewett. Howes served until 1853. In 1858 Howes moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he launched a successful career in real estate.
