George Holden (Australian Rules Footballer)
George Hugh Holden (15 April 1889 – 21 July 1959) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It ... (VFL). Holden was both a centreman and wingman during his career with Fitzroy, which began in 1908. He was club champion in his debut season, winning the best and fairest award for the second time in 1915. One of Fitzroy's best in their 1913 premiership, Holden was named as the club's coach three years later and was a premiership player again in his first year in the role. He also captained the club in 1917 and 1918 while remaining coach but had to retire at the start of the 1919 season after suffering a serious knee injury. George Holden (footballer, Born 1859)
George Henry Holden (6 October 1859 – 1920s) was a footballer who, playing as an outside-right, made four appearances for England in the 1880s. Football career Holden was born in West Bromwich and attended St. John's School in Wednesbury. He began his football career with Old Park F.C. in Wednesbury in 1876 and then joined Wednesbury St. James F.C. in 1877. From there he joined Wednesbury Old Athletic in 1878. Holden established a reputation for being an extremely fast winger with exceptional dribbling skills. During his first spell with Wednesbury Old Athletic, he won four international caps. He made his international debut for England on 12 March 1881 against Scotland. England went down to a "humiliating" 6–1 defeat. His next appearances came three years later in 1884, when he played in all three matches in the inaugural British Home Championship. England's opening match was against Ireland at Ballynafeigh Park, Belfast on 26 January 1884. England "won the match with ease ... George Holden (politician)
George Kenyon Holden, (1808 – 16 April 1874) was an Australian Crown Prosecutor, banker and politician who served on the New South Wales Legislative Council. In correspondence with his associate John Stuart Mill, he was one of the first politicians in the world to propose proportional representation to parliament in 1861. Holden was a trustee of the New South Wales Savings Bank, a director of the Liverpool and London Fire and Life Insurance Company, the chairman of the National Schools Board, and president of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts. He was also an active environmentalist as a founding member of the Acclimatisation Society of New South Wales. Family He was born in Worcester, England to Adam Holden and Maria (née Gillam). George Holden (professor)
George Walker Holden is professor emeritus and a developmental psychologist who worked at the Southern Methodist University, where he was the former Chair of the Psychology Department. Prior to that he was professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Holden is the co-founder of the U.S. Alliance to End the Hitting of Children and the author of several books on the subject of child development. He is the father of three children and grandfather of five. Early life George Holden's father was Reuben A. Holden, who was an administrator at Yale University and later become President of Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina. He received his BA from Yale University and his MA and PhD in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Holden Baronets
There have been three baronetcies created for persons with the surname Holden, all in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Two of the creations are extant as of 2010. The Holden Baronetcy, of Oakworth House in Keighley in the County of York, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom in 1893 for the inventor, manufacturer and Liberal politician Isaac Holden. He had previously represented Knaresborough, Northern West Riding of Yorkshire and Keighley in Parliament. His eldest son, the second Baronet, represented Bradford East and Buckrose in the House of Commons. On 4 July 1908, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Holden, of Alston in the County of Cumberland. The barony became extinct on the death of his grandson, the third Baron, on 6 July 1951. However, the baronetcy was passed on to his second cousin once removed, the fifth Baronet. He was the son of a younger son of the first Baronet.
