George Grey, 8th Baron Grey Of Groby
George Harry Grey, 8th Baron Grey of Groby (5 April 1802 – 24 October 1835), was a British peer. Grey was the son of George Grey, 6th Earl of Stamford, by the Honourable Henrietta Charlotte Elizabeth Charteris, daughter of Francis Charteris, Lord Elcho. In December 1832 he was summoned to the House of Lords through a writ of acceleration in his father's junior title of Baron Grey of Groby. Lord Grey married his first cousin Lady Katherine Charteris Wemyss, daughter of Francis Douglas, 8th Earl of Wemyss, in 1824. He died in October 1835, aged 33, predeceasing his father. As he died before his father he is held to have become the 8th Baron Grey. His son George Grey, 7th Earl of Stamford, George succeeded in the earldom in 1845. Lady Grey died in January 1844, aged 42. George Harry Booth-Grey, 6th Earl of Stamford and 2nd Earl of Warrington (31 October 1765 – 26 April 1845), styled Lord Grey from 1768 to 1819, was a British peer and parliamentarian. Booth-Grey was the eldest son of George Grey, 5th Earl of Stamford and his wife, Henrietta Cavendish Bentinck. He was educated at Winchester College and Trinity College, Cambridge. From 1790 to 1796, he was the Whig Member of Parliament for Aldeburgh. He contested both Grampound and St Germans, losing the former but representing the latter from 1796 to 1802. In 1819 he succeeded his father as Earl of Stamford and Warrington, inheriting the family estates at Enville, Staffordshire, Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, Dunham Massey in Cheshire and Stalybridge in Lancashire. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire in 1819, and in 1827, succeeded George Cholmondeley, 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley as Vice-Admiral and Chamberlain of the county. Francis Wemyss Charteris, Lord Elcho (31 January 1749 – 20 January 1808) was a Scottish nobleman and member of parliament. Life He was the only son of Francis Charteris, second son of James Wemyss, 5th Earl of Wemyss. The fifth Earl's eldest son David Wemyss, Lord Elcho had been attainted for his part in the Jacobite Rising of 1745 so after the Earl's death in 1756 the earldom became forfeit. Charteris was elected to Parliament for the Haddington district of burghs in 1780. From 1784 he was in opposition to the government of William Pitt the Younger. In 1787 Charteris' uncle Lord Elcho (who but for his attainder would have been 6th Earl of Wemyss) died. As Charteris' father had not been attainted himself, he assumed the title as 7th Earl of Wemyss, with Charteris himself assuming the subsidiary title Lord Elcho. A writ in acceleration, commonly called a writ of acceleration, is a type of writ of summons that enabled the eldest son and heir apparent of a peer with more than one peerage to attend the British or Irish House of Lords, using one of his father's subsidiary titles, during his father's lifetime. This procedure could be used to bring younger men into the Lords and increase the number of capable members in a house that drew on a very small pool of talent (a few dozen families in its early centuries, a few hundred in its later centuries). The procedure of writs of acceleration was introduced by King Edward IV in the mid 15th century. It was a fairly rare occurrence, and in over 400 years only 98 writs of acceleration were issued. Francis Wemyss Charteris Douglas, 8th Earl of Wemyss, 4th Earl of March (15 April 177228 June 1853), known as the Earl of March from 1810 to 1826 and as the Earl of Wemyss and March from 1826 to 1853, was a Scottish peer. George Harry Booth-Grey, 7th Earl of Stamford and 3rd Earl of Warrington (7 January 1827 – 2 January 1883) was an English cricketer, landowner and peer, who sat on the Whig benches in the House of Lords. Early life George Harry Booth-Grey was born at Enville, Staffordshire, the only son of George Grey (1802–1835), who as Lord Grey of Groby had been summoned by writ to Parliament in 1832. Earl of Stamford was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1628 for Henry Grey, 2nd Baron Grey of Groby.
