George Gerald King
George Gerald King (11 December 1836 – 28 April 1928) was a Canadian politician. Born in Springfield, New Brunswick, the son of Malcolm King and Elizabeth Hickson, he was a businessman before being elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the New Brunswick riding of Queen's in the 1878 federal election. A Liberal, he was re-elected in the 1882 election. He was defeated in the 1887 election and an 1888 by-election, and was re-elected in the 1891 and 1896 elections. In 1860, King married Esther Briggs. Their son George Herbert King served in the New Brunswick assembly and their son James Horace King served in the House of Commons. Queen's was a federal electoral district (Canada), electoral district in New Brunswick, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1896. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867. It consisted of the Queens County, New Brunswick, County of Queen's. It was abolished in 1892 when it was merged into Sunbury—Queen's Riding (division), riding. James Horace King
James Horace King, (January 18, 1873 – July 14, 1955) was a Canadian physician and parliamentarian. Born in Chipman, New Brunswick, James King was the son of George Gerald King, a businessman and Canadian politician in his own right. The elder King was a Liberal Member of Parliament in the nineteenth century, and a Senator from 1896 until his death in 1928. The younger King earned his MD from McGill University in 1895. After practicing medicine for a short period in New Brunswick, he moved to the Kootenay region of British Columbia in 1898 serving a large rural territory. In 1910, he attended an international medical conference in Budapest, and played a leading role in establishing the American College of Surgeons in Chicago, serving as a governor of the college. In 1932, he was created a Knight of Grace of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem for his services to medicine. 1896 Canadian Federal Election
The 1896 Canadian federal election was held on June 23, 1896, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 8th Parliament of Canada. Though the Conservative Party, led by Prime Minister Charles Tupper, won a plurality of the popular vote, the Liberal Party, led by Wilfrid Laurier, won the majority of seats to form the next government. The election ended 18 years of Conservative rule. Description The governing Conservative Party, since the death of John A. Macdonald in 1891, was disorganized. Following Macdonald's death, John Abbott spent a year as Prime Minister before handing over to John Thompson. Thompson proved a relatively popular Prime Minister, but his sudden death in December 1894 resulted in his replacement by Mackenzie Bowell, whose tenure as Prime Minister proved a disaster. 1891 Canadian Federal Election
The 1891 Canadian federal election was held on March 5, 1891, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 7th Parliament of Canada. It was won by the Conservative Party of Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald. The main issue of the 1891 campaign was Macdonald's National Policy, a policy of protective tariffs. The Liberals supported reciprocity (free trade) with the United States. Macdonald led a Conservative campaign emphasizing stability, and retained the Conservatives' majority in the House of Commons. It was a close election and he campaigned hard. Macdonald died a few months after the election, which led to his succession by four different Conservative Prime Ministers until the 1896 election. John Ferris (New Brunswick Politician)
John Ferris (January 9, 1811 – November 3, 1884) was a New Brunswick businessman, explorer and political figure. He represented Queen's in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1867 to 1878. His surname also appears as Farris in some sources, such as the 1881 census. He was born in Cambridge, Queen's County, New Brunswick in early 1811, the son of John Ferris. Ferris was a lumber merchant and farmer.
