George King (Australian Politician)
George King (21 December 1814 – 22 June 1894), was a merchant, pastoralist and politician in colonial Australia, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly 1869 to 1872 and of the Queensland Legislative Council 1882 to 1890. King was born in Riga, Russia (now in Latvia), his father, Robert King, was a partner in the Baltic firm of Balfour & Co., of Riga. George received his education and mercantile training in London and in Europe. King emigrated to Australia in July 1839, and settled in Sydney, where he was a director of the Australian Trust Company, of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, and of the London Chartered Bank of Australia. ''George M!'' is a Broadway musical based on the life of George M. Cohan, the biggest Broadway star of his day who was known as "The Man Who Owned Broadway." The book for the musical was written by Michael Stewart, John Pascal, and Francine Pascal. Music and lyrics were by George M. Cohan himself, with revisions for the musical by Cohan's daughter, Mary Cohan. The story covers the period from the late 1880s until 1937 and focuses on Cohan's life and show business career from his early days in vaudeville with his parents and sister to his later success as a Broadway singer, dancer, composer, lyricist, theatre director and producer. George Gelaga King (29 October 1932 - 5 April 2016) was a judge in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and recently a justice of the Special Court for Sierra Leone. Early life and education George Gelaga King was born in Zaire to Sierra Leonean parents from the Sierra Leone Creole people, Creole ethnic group who were settled in the then Belgian Congo. King was subsequently educated at local schools in Freetown and at the University of London. George King (1899 – 26 June 1966) was an English actors' agent, film director, producer and screenplay writer. He is associated with the production of quota quickies. He helmed several of Tod Slaughter's melodramas, including 1936's '' The Demon Barber of Fleet Street''. Career King entered into the film industry after completion of medical studies. His first film ''Too Many Crooks'' featured a young stage actor named Laurence Olivier, also making his film debut. Once launched from routine thrillers, King made the usual array of lightweight comedies, romances and thrillers. With the outbreak of war, King directed some distinctly up-market war movies, most successful of which was ''Candlelight in Algeria'', a vehicle for James Mason. George Lanchester King was the second Anglican Bishop of Madagascar from 1899 to 1919. He was born in 1860 and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. Ordained in 1884, he began his career with curacies at St Andrew, Tudhoe Grange and Holy Trinity, Gateshead. He was made deacon on Trinity Sunday 1884 (8 June) at St Andrew's Church, Bishop Auckland and ordained priest the following Trinity Sunday (31 May 1885) at Durham Cathedral — both times by J. B. Lightfoot, Bishop of Durham. George King (botanist)
Sir George King (12 April 1840 – 12 February 1909) was a British botanist who was appointed superintendent of the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta in 1871, and became the first Director of the Botanical Survey of India from 1890. He was recognised for his work in the cultivation of cinchona and for setting up a system for the inexpensive distribution of quinine throughout India through the postal system. Early life George was born in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, to Robert King and Cecilia Anderson. Robert King was a bookseller who moved to Aberdeen to partner with his brothers who were also in the book business. One brother Arthur was the founder of the Aberdeen University Press.
