George Fraser (New Zealand Engineer)
George Fraser (28 June 1832 – 29 July 1901) was a New Zealand engineer, foundry proprietor and ship owner. He was born in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on 28 June 1832. Early life George Fraser, was born at Fort Dee, or Footdee, in Aberdeen, on 25 June, or possibly 28 June 1832, the son of Rachel Gray and her husband, George Fraser, an iron moulder at Simpson's Engineering Works. He went to a local school, until apprenticed, aged 14, to local engineers and shipbuilders, Hall, Catto, Thompson & Co. His next job was draughtsman at Smith and Tulloch, engineers of Greenock, then briefly, aged 20, as manager of the Caulton Foundry in Glasgow. He then spent seven years as an apprentice at Simpson's in the drawing office and learning machining, fitting and pattern making. On 8 October 1854, near Glasgow, he married Christina Davidson, daughter of the manager at Simpson's. George Fraser (Canadian Football)
Gerorge Fraser (1911 – December 9, 1992) was a Canadian football player, playing from 1932 to 1945. Born in Perthshire, Scotland and coming to Canada in 1921, Fraser played all of his career with Ottawa-based teams. Starting with the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1932, he played guard and became a league leading kicker, was named an all-Canadian all-star in 1938, 1939 and 1940, and won the Grey Cup in 1940. He also played in the Grey Cup games of 1936, 1939 and 1941. In 1941 he scored 11 of Ottawa's 16 points. In 1942 he was playing coach with the Riders. During the war years he played in the Ontario Rugby Football Union, with the Ottawa Combines in 1943 and the Ottawa Trojans in 1944. George Fraser (1881 – 21 October 1951) was a Scottish footballer who made 265 appearances in the Football League for Lincoln City. He played at right half. He played for his local club, Elgin City, before moving to England to join Sunderland in 1889, but never represented them in senior competition, and signed for Second Division In sport, the Second Division, also called Division 2 or Division II is usually the second highest division of a league, and will often have promotion and relegation with divisions above and below. George Fraser (horticulturist)
George Fraser (born 25 October 1854 in Lossiemouth, Moray, Scotland, and died in 1944 in Ucluelet, British Columbia, Canada) was one of the world's leading hybridizers, especially of rhododendrons. Early life Fraser began his gardening career at the age of seventeen at Christies Nursery in Fochabers, Moray. He was then apprenticed at Gordon Castle, Fochabers. On completion of his apprenticeship, he spent the next four years studying horticulture in Edinburgh funding this by working on a local estate. From there he worked in Mollance in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, then at Hartfield House in Renfrewshire. While still in his twenties Fraser took on the post of head gardener at Craigflower, Fife. His last position in Scotland was as head gardener at the large country estate of Auchmore, Killin, Perthshire. George MacDonald Fraser (2 April 1925 – 2 January 2008) was a British author and screenwriter. He is best known for a series of works that featured the character Flashman. Biography Fraser was born to Scottish parents in Carlisle, England, on 2 April 1925. His father was a doctor and his mother a nurse. It was his father who passed on to Fraser his love of reading, and a passion for his Scottish heritage. Fraser was educated at Carlisle Grammar School and Glasgow Academy; he later described himself as a poor student due to "sheer laziness". This meant that he was unable to follow his father's wishes and study medicine. George Sutherland Fraser (8 November 1915 – 3 January 1980) was a Scottish poet, literary critic and academic. Biography Fraser was born in Glasgow, Scotland, later moving with his family to Aberdeen. He attended the University of St. Andrews. During World War II he served in the British Army in Cairo and Eritrea. He was published as a poet in ''Salamander'', a Cairo literary magazine. At the same time he was involved with the New Apocalyptics group, writing an introductory essay for the anthology ''The White Horseman'', and formulating as well as anyone did the idea that they were successors to surrealism. After the war he became a prominent figure in London's literary circles, working as a journalist and critic. Together with his wife Paddy he made friends with a gamut of literary figures, from the intellectual leader William Empson to the eccentric John Gawsworth. George Willoughby Fraser (baptized 5 August 1866 – 24 November 1923) was an English civil engineer who operated at the service of the Egypt Exploration Fund. His parents were Sir Thomas Fraser and Matilda Wildman. As part of his work for the Egypt Exploration Fund, he worked as a draftsman in the excavations conducted by Sir Flinders Petrie, Percy Edward Newberry and Marcus Worsley Blackden in the Faiyum, in Beni Hasan, in Deir el-Bersha and in the quarries of Hatnub. George Henry Fraser
George Henry Fraser (c. 1880 – 9 December 1919) was a navigator and aircraft mechanic who flew with pilot Cedric Howell as one of the teams competing in the England to Australia air race in December 1919. Howell and Fraser's aircraft made a forced landing in the St George's Bay, Corfu; both men are presumed to have drowned as a result, although only Howell's body was ever recovered. James George Frazer
Sir James George Frazer (; 1 January 1854 – 7 May 1941) was a Scottish social anthropologist and folklorist influential in the early stages of the modern studies of mythology and comparative religion. Personal life He was born on 1 January 1854 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Katherine Brown and Daniel F. Frazer, a chemist. Frazer attended school at Springfield Academy and Larchfield Academy in Helensburgh. He studied at the University of Glasgow and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with honours in classics (his dissertation was published years later as ''The Growth of Plato's Ideal Theory'') and remained a Classics Fellow all his life.
