George Finch, 9th Earl Of Winchilsea
George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea (4 November 1752 – 2 August 1826), was an important figure in the history of cricket. His main contributions to the game were patronage and organisation but Winchilsea, an amateur, was also a very keen player. Finch served with the 87th Foot at the time of the American Revolutionary War from its formation in 1779 to its disbanding in 1783, with the temporary ranks of major and lieutenant-colonel. Finch was the first president of the Royal Institution, and it was through his influence that it received the endorsement of King George III. Early life Finch was the son of William Finch, who was in turn the second son, by his second marriage, of Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham (1647–1730), and Charlotte Fermor, daughter of Thomas Fermor, 1st Earl of Pomfret. George Finch (politician, Born 1794)
George Somerset Finch (1794 – 29 June 1870), of Burley-on-the-Hill, Rutland, was a British landowner and politician. Background Finch was the illegitimate son of George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea and Mrs Phoebe Thompson and was educated at Harrow School (1805–11), Trinity College, Cambridge (1811) and the Middle Temple (1817). In 1808 he was granted a licence to use the Finch arms. On his father's death in 1826 he inherited substantial estates, including Burley House near Oakham, Rutland and a large fortune. Political career Finch sat as Member of Parliament for Lymington between 1820 and 1821, for Stamford between 1832 and 1837 and for Rutland between 1846 and 1847. He was High Sheriff of Rutland for 1829–30. Family Finch was twice married. He married firstly, Jane, daughter of Vice-Admiral John Richard Delap, in 1819. George Finch (politician, Born 1835)
George Henry Finch (20 February 1835 – 22 May 1907) was an English Conservative politician who represented Rutland in the House of Commons for nearly 40 years, becoming Father of the House of Commons in 1906. Finch was the son of George Finch, of Burley-on-the-Hill near Oakham and Belton. On the death of his father in 1870 he became an extensive landowner, inheriting Burley House, near Oakham, Rutland. Finch was elected as the Member of Parliament for Rutland on 23 November 1867. He held the seat until his death in 1907. He married twice; firstly, in 1861, Emily Eglantyne Balfour, who died in 1865 after giving him a son and 2 daughters and secondly, Edith Montgomery, with whom he had a further 7 children. George Finch (chemist)
George Ingle Finch (4 August 1888 – 22 November 1970) was an Australian chemist and mountaineer. He was the first person known to climb to a height exceeding 8,000 metres. His obituary in The Times describes him as "one of the two best alpinists of his time" (with George Mallory). Education and military service He was born in Australia to Charles Edward and Laura Isabel (nee Black) Finch, educated in German-speaking Switzerland, and studied physical sciences at the University of Geneva. He began studying medicine in Paris (where he scaled the walls of Notre Dame with his brother) but decided he preferred the physical sciences. During the First World War, he served with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1918 New Year Honours for services in connection with the War in France, Egypt and Salonika. George Finch (8 October 1930 – 13 February 2013) was a British architect. He was a committed socialist who believed architecture had the power to transform the lives of post-war Londoners. Finch's ideals drove his passion for designing social housing, civic and environmental buildings for everyday people built to the highest building standards. Biography Finch was born in Tottenham, the son of a milkman. During WWII, he and his sister, Shirley, were evacuated to Saffron Walden, Essex, where he attended Newport Free Grammar School. Finch then studied architecture, at North London Polytechnic (now London Metropolitan University), moving in 1950 to the Architectural Association School of Architecture. He graduated in 1955 from a year that included Neave Brown, Kenneth Frampton, Patrick Hodgkinson, William Gillitt and Roy Stout.
