George Evans (footballer, Born 1935)
George Albert Evans (26 July 1935 – December 2000) was a Welsh footballer who played as a wing half for Wrexham and Chester in the 1950s and 1960s. Playing career Evans spent time as a youngster with Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool before playing non-league football for Oswestry Town. He later joined Wrexham as a part-time player, continuing to work at Bersham Colliery near Wrexham. In October 1957 he made his debut in The Football League for Wrexham against Hartlepools United, going on to make 175 league appearances for the club until 1963. That summer saw Evans move to Chester along with Stan Bennion in exchange for Bill Myerscough, where he again more than 100 league appearances. After leaving Chester in 1969, Evans played for Bethesda Athletic and Colwyn Bay while continuing to work for the National Coal Board. The FAW Welsh Cup ( cy, Cwpan Cymdeithas Pêl-droed Cymru), currently known as the JD Welsh Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knock-out football competition contested annually by teams in the Welsh football league system. It is considered the most prestigious of the cup competitions in domestic Welsh association football. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is the organising body of this competition, which has been run (except during the two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic) every year since its inception in 1877–78. In the early years of organised football in Wales, football was very much the sport of north Wales rather than the rugby union playing south – the FAW was founded in Wrexham in 1876, and Wrexham remained the site of the FAW's head office until 1986; it was not until 1912 that a southern team, Cardiff City, won the Welsh Cup for the first time. Football League Fourth Division
The Football League Fourth Division was the fourth-highest division in the English football league system from the 1958–59 season until the creation of the Premier League prior to the 1992–93 season. Whilst the division disappeared in name in 1992, the 4th tier of English football continued as the Football League Third Division, and later became known as Football League Two. History The Fourth Division was created in 1958 alongside a new Third Division by merging the regionalised Third Division North and Third Division South. The original economic reasons for having the two regional leagues had become less apparent and thus it was decided to create two national leagues at levels three and four. Bill Myerscough
Bill Myerscough (22 June 1930 in Bolton, Lancashire – 16 March 1977) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for six clubs. He was in the Aston Villa side that won the 1957 FA Cup Final. Playing career An inside forward, Myerscough began his professional career at the relatively late age of 24 when he joined Walsall from Ashfield in time for the 1954–55 season. He spent a season with the Saddlers before joining Football League First Division side Aston Villa, where he went on to make 64 league appearances over the next four years. The highlight though came in the 1957 FA Cup Final, when Villa denied Manchester United a First Division and FA Cup double with a 2–1 victory. Unfortunately the following season ended in relegation and Myerscough spent a season with Rotherham United before joining Coventry City in July 1960. Stanley Bennion (9 February 1938 – 5 August 2013) was an English professional footballer. He played in the Football League as a winger for Wrexham and Chester. Playing career Bennion progressed through Wrexham's youth setup and signed as a part-time professional with the club in September 1959.''Player Memories'', Chester City v.
