George Douglas, 1st Earl Of Angus
George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus (1380–1403) was a Scottish nobleman and peer. Life He was born at Tantallon Castle, East Lothian, Scotland. He was the natural-illegitimate son of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas and Margaret Stewart, Dowager Countess of Mar & Countess of Angus and Lady Abernethy in her own right. His father's wife Margaret had already produced an heir for her Lord in 1358, James, 2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar, who succeeded his father upon his death in 1384. In 1389, Margaret of Angus relinquished her title in favour of her son, but George did not assume it until his betrothal in 1397 to Princess Mary Stewart, daughter of King Robert III of Scotland. The influence of George's mother must have been considerable - in addition to obtaining a royal bride for George, she persuaded King Robert III to confirm him in his style of Earl of Angus, and also to bestow upon him the lordships of Abernethy, (Perthshire) and Bonkill, (Berwickshire); and "to end ... George Douglas, 17th Earl Of Morton
George Sholto Douglas, 17th Earl of Morton (23 December 1789 – 31 March 1858), known as George Douglas until 1827, was a Scottish Tory politician. Douglas was the son of the Hon. John Douglas, second son of James Douglas, 14th Earl of Morton. His mother was Lady Frances, daughter of Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. He succeeded his cousin in the earldom in 1827 and was elected a Scottish Representative Peer in 1828. He served as a Lord-in-waiting (government whip in the House of Lords) from 1841 to 1846 in the second Tory administration of Sir Robert Peel and in 1852 in the first Conservative administration of the Earl of Derby. Lord Morton married Frances Theodora, daughter of Sir George Henry Rose, in 1817. Their second son the Hon. George Henry Douglas became an Admiral in the Royal Navy. George Douglas (''c''. 1540-1587) was one of the Eighty-five martyrs of England and Wales. Born in Edinburgh, he was originally a teacher by profession. His family were from Bonjedward near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. Converting to Catholicism, he travelled to France around 1556 where he was ordained a secular priest in Notre Dame, Paris, in 1574- possibly at the testimonial of Mary, Queen of Scots. Returning to the north of England, he was a priest in York, where it seems he was 'apparelled in course canvas dublit and hose,' and in the East Midlands as well.Thomas, P.V., 'Privy Council And 'Vagarant Runagate' Priests in Elizabethan York,' ''The Yorkshire Archaeological Journal'' 69 (1997), 184. Sir George Henry Scott-Douglas, 4th Baronet (19 June 1825 – 26 June 1885) was a Conservative Party politician and soldier. Military career During his life, he was a captain of the 34th Regiment of Foot from 1843 to 1851 where he was stationed at Athlone, Ireland, and Corfu. He was also Lieutenant-Colonel of the Roxburgh and Selkirk Rifle Volunteers from 1868 to 1885, and Brigadier General of the Royal Company of Archers. Political career Harris was elected MP for Roxburghshire in 1874, but lost the seat at the next election in 1880.
