George Dougherty
George Mervyn Dougherty (9 December 1913 – 21 November 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played for four clubs in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1934 to 1945. Family The son of Cahir Dougherty (1878-1958), and Helen Mary "Nellie" Dougherty (1885-1951), née Smeaton, George Mervyn Dougherty was born at Beulah, Victoria on 9 December 1913. His brother, Noel Dougherty (1916-), tried out with Carlton (in 1933), Fitzroy (in 1935), and Geelong (in 1937), and another brother, Lyle Dougherty (1926-2015), tried out with South Melbourne (in 1950). He married Verlie Norma Clifford (1921-1991) in 1941. Beulah, Victoria
Beulah is a town in the southern Mallee region of Victoria, Australia. The town is in the Shire of Yarriambiack local government area, 395 kilometres north-west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the 2016 census, Beulah had a population of 329. History The town's name is taken from the Book of Isaiah, 62:4. In some English translations the word is given as "married" or "inhabited". Beulah was established on land that was once part of Brim station. Closer settlement began in the 1880s and the town site was proclaimed in 1891. 1937 VFL Grand Final
The 1937 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Geelong Football Club and Collingwood Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 25 September 1937. It was the 39th annual grand final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1937 VFL season. The match, attended by a then-record crowd of 88,540 spectators, was won by Geelong by a margin of 32 points, marking that club's third premiership victory and first since winning the 1931 VFL Grand Final. Due to the excellent display of skills, as well as the vigorous but fair play, and the closeness of the contest that was not decided until late in the last quarter, this Grand Final was regarded by many contemporaries as the greatest ever played. The 1942 VFL season was the 46th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. Played during the peak of World War II, only eleven of the league's twelve clubs competed, with withdrawing due to travel restrictions. The season ran from 9 May until 19 September, and comprised a home-and-away season in which each club played either 14 or 15 games, followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The 1940 VFL season was the 44th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 27 April until 28 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs.
