George Courtenay (politician)
George Courtenay (1666–1725), of Ford, Devon, was an English landowner and Tory politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons between 1702 and 1713. Courtenay was baptized on 13 May 1666, the seventh, but fourth surviving son of Sir William Courtenay, 1st Baronet. He was admitted at Middle Temple in 1684. In November 1688, he joined the Prince of Orange at Exeter. He was an ensign in the 1st Foot Guards in 1689, and was appointed vice-admiral of Devon and Exeter in May 1689, holding the post for the rest of his life. He inherited the estate of Ford from his mother in January 1694. Courtenay was returned as a Tory Member of Parliament for East Looe at a by-election on 4 February 1702 and voted for the vindication of the Commons actions in impeaching the King's Whig ministers on 26 February 1702. Ivanhoe (1913 American Film)
''Ivanhoe'' is a 1913 American silent adventure/drama film starring King Baggot, Leah Baird, Herbert Brenon, Evelyn Hope, and Walter Craven. Directed by Herbert Brenon and produced by Carl Laemmle's Independent Moving Pictures after IMP was absorbed into the newly founded Universal, which was the distributor, the screenplay was adapted by Brenon based on the epic 1819 historical novel of the same title by Sir Walter Scott. One of the first expeditions abroad, ''Ivanhoe'' was filmed on location in the United Kingdom. A copy of this early feature length production is preserved at the Museum of Modern Art in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Sir George Courtenay, 1st Baronet
Sir George Oughtred Courtenay, 1st Baronet, of Newcastle ( – 1644) was an Irish landowner and soldier. He defended Limerick at the siege of 1642 during the Irish Rebellion of 1641. Birth and origins George was born between 1580 and 1585, the fourth son of William Courtenay and his first wife, Elizabeth Manners. His father was a member of the Devonshire gentry but would much later in 1831 be recognised as ''de jure'' 3rd Earl of Devon. His father's family was the English branch of the House of Courtenay. His mother was a daughter of Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland in England. Plantation of Munster His father was an undertaker in the Plantation of Munster after the Desmond Rebellions and was in 1585 granted the seignory of Newcastle, 10,500 acres, in the Barony of Connello, in the western part of County Limerick. George Courtney
George Courtney MBE (born 4 June 1941) is an English former football referee based in Spennymoor, County Durham. He is said to be a freemason. His vocational career was spent as a primary school headteacher. Ascent through English refereeing Courtney started refereeing school games in and around his area of Spennymoor, in 1961. He later carried out both linesman and refereeing duties for the Northern League before becoming a Football League linesman in 1971. Just two years later he was appointed to the supplementary panel of referees and one year after that was included in the full list of referees at the age of only thirty three. In 1976, despite only being in his second year as a Football League referee, he was appointed to the decisive match for the League title in which Liverpool staged a dramatic recovery to beat Wolves and overtake QPR.
