George Cooper (Canadian Politician)
George Thomas Hendery Cooper (born 24 June 1941 in Halifax, Nova Scotia) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was a lawyer. He was elected to Parliament at the Halifax riding in the 1979 general election. He served one federal term in office, the 31st Canadian Parliament, during which he was parliamentary secretary for the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice. In the 1980 federal election, Cooper was defeated by Gerald Regan of the Liberals. Cooper was the first Canadian Chair of the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States. He helped inaugurate Fulbright scholarships for outstanding students and academics to enhance mutual understanding between our two countries. 1980 Canadian Federal Election
The 1980 Canadian federal election was held on February 18, 1980, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 32nd Parliament of Canada. It was called when the minority Progressive Conservative government led by Prime Minister Joe Clark was defeated in the Commons. Clark and his government had been under attack for its perceived inexperience, for example, in its handling of its 1979 election campaign commitment to move Canada's embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The Allan Memorial Institute (AMI; french: Institut Allan Memorial), also known colloquially as "The Allan", is a former psychiatric hospital and research institute located at 1025 Pine Avenue West in Montreal, Quebec.
