George Castle (lacrosse)
George Castle (born October 8, 1984) from Glenside, Pennsylvania, is an American lacrosse player previously with the Philadelphia Wings of National Lacrosse League. He is a defensive midfielder. A William Penn Charter School graduate, Castle played collegiate lacrosse with the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays where he helped his team win two national championships. In December 2008, he joined the Philadelphia Wings as a free agent for the 2009 season, primarily as a defensive player. Castle's father, J.R. Castle, played on the Wings' inaugural team during its 1987 season. In 2012, Castle was selected in the 4th round of the 2012 North American Lacrosse League draft (23rd overall) and played for the Stickhorses in their 2013 NALL campaign. The Radotin Custodes (Czech Republic) also selected Castle 17th overall in the European Lacrosse League draft where he also competed in the 2013 ELL season. Philadelphia Wings (1987–2014)
The Philadelphia Wings were a member of the National Lacrosse League, a professional box lacrosse league in North America starting in 1987. They played at the Spectrum (1987–96) and then at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Wings were one of the four original teams in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League that began play in 1987 and the only team to reclaim its identity from the original 1974–75 National Lacrosse League and also retained the first Philadelphia Wings logo. The Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League was renamed the Major Indoor Lacrosse League in 1989, and again to the National Lacrosse League in 1998. They are the only franchise to have played all 24 seasons in the same city. There are many respected amateur programs at the club, college, and high school level, as well as several respected past and present professional teams in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and Major League Lacrosse (MLL). North American Lacrosse League
The North American Lacrosse League (NALL) was a professional indoor lacrosse league based in the United States. It was founded in 2011 as North America's fourth professional lacrosse league, after American Lacrosse League (field lacrosse, 1987) Major League Lacrosse (a field lacrosse league) and the National Lacrosse League (the established professional indoor lacrosse organization). However, a rift in the organization led to the departure of four of the five teams to form the Professional Lacrosse League. The Philadelphia Wings were one of the original four franchises in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League, joining the New Jersey Saints, Washington Wave, and Baltimore Thunder in 1987. While the Wings went only 3-4 that first season including a loss in the playoffs, they drew an average of almost 12,000 fans to their three 1987 regular season games.
