George Byer
George Henry Byer (June 22, 1912 - August 22, 2000) was an American politician who served as Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1959 to 1961. He was the first full-time mayor of Anchorage, and was chiefly responsible for Anchorage's first two All-America City Award designations. He was a Democrat. Biography George Byer, born on June 22, 1912, moved to Alaska in 1947, after serving in the United States Army during World War II. From 1951, he worked as a mail carrier. In 1956, he campaigned successfully to have Anchorage named as " All-America City", and in 1959 he was elected mayor of the city, serving two terms. 1972 Winter Olympics
The 1972 Winter Olympics, officially the and commonly known as Sapporo 1972 ( ja, 札幌1972), was a winter multi-sport event held from February 3 to 13, 1972, in Sapporo, Japan. It was the first Winter Olympic Games to take place outside Europe and North America. Host city selection Sapporo first won the rights to host the 1940 Winter Olympics, but Japan resigned as the Games' host after its Second Sino-Japanese War, 1937 invasion of China. The 1940 Games were later cancelled. All the cities awarded Games that were cancelled due to war have since hosted the Games (London, Tokyo, Helsinki, Sapporo and Cortina d'Ampezzo). Sapporo competed with Banff, Lahti, and Salt Lake City. The Games were awarded at the 64th IOC Session in Rome, Italy, on April 26, 1966. George Sharrock
George Ormand Sharrock (May 2, 1910 – March 6, 2005) was Mayor of Anchorage from 1961 to 1964. He is sometimes known as "The Earthquake Mayor" for having been in office during the devastating Good Friday earthquake of 1964, and for his work in the aftermath. Biography George Sharrock was born May 2, 1910, in Zanesville, Ohio. He grew up in Canton, Ohio, where he attended Stark Elementary School and graduated from McKinley High School. After spending a number of years as a factory supervisor in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he came to Alaska in 1947 to work for Pacific Northern Airlines, which was later merged into Western Airlines. He served on the Anchorage City Council from 1959 to 1961, when he was elected mayor. In the wake of the earthquake, he decided not to run for re-election. Hewitt V. "Hoots" Lounsbury (February 22, 1911 – January 9, 1971) was an American engineer and politician. Lounsbury served as the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1958 to 1959, following the resignation of Anton Anderson for health reasons. Hewitt V. Lounsbury was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on February 22, 1911. He came to the then- territory of Alaska in May 1944 with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In 1949, he founded Lounsbury and Associates, a surveying and engineering firm. He died at the age of 59 on January 9, 1971, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He had three sons with his wife, Ester: Loren H., Joel and Jon. Loren Lounsbury followed in his father's footsteps in both business and politics. Hemet is a city in the San Jacinto Valley in Riverside County, California. It covers a total area of , about half of the valley, which it shares with the neighboring city of San Jacinto. The All-America City Award is a community recognition program in the United States given by the National Civic League.
