George Burnett (writer)
George Burnett (1776?–1811) was an English nonconformist minister, surgeon and tutor, known best as a writer in that time. Life He was the son of a farmer at Huntspill in Somerset, where he was born about 1776. After an introduction to classical literature by a clergyman in the neighbourhood, he was sent to Balliol College, Oxford, with a view to his taking orders in Church of England. After two or three years' residence he became disillusioned with college life, and took part in the scheme of pantisocracy with Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey. After a period supported by his father, Burnett obtained admission as a student at Manchester New College. He was appointed pastor of a congregation at Great Yarmouth, but did not remain there long. He subsequently became, for a short time, a student of medicine in the University of Edinburgh. George Burnett (officer Of Arms)
George Burnett, LLD, WS (1822–1890) was a long-serving Scottish officer of arms. Life He was born on 9 March 1822 the second son of John Burnett, 5th Laird of Kemnay in Aberdeenshire. He trained as a lawyer (normal for the Lord Lyon) and in 1860 appears as an advocate in Edinburgh living at 21 Ainslie Place on the Moray Estate. He was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms in 1866 and served in that post until his death in 1890, being known in this period as George Burnett, Lord Lyon. He died on 23 January 1890 and is buried in the churchyard of St John's Church on Princes Street. George Ritter Burnett
George Ritter Burnett (April 23, 1858 – November 1, 1908) was a United States Army officer who received the U.S. military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. Life and career Burnett graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1880. On August 16, 1881, he was serving as a second lieutenant with the 9th Cavalry Regiment of the Buffalo Soldiers. On that day, Burnett participated in the Battle of Cuchillo Negro Creek in the Black Range Mountains near Cuchillo Negro Creek of New Mexico, where he was cited for helping rescue stranded soldiers under heavy fire. One of his privates, Augustus Walley, and a first sergeant, Moses Williams also received the Medal of Honor for actions in this battle. He retired due to injuries in February 1891. He subsequently served as a colonel in the Iowa National Guard from 1892 until 1905, and in the Missouri National Guard from 1905 until 1908. George Burnett (ice Hockey)
George Burnett (born March 25, 1962) is the general manager of the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League. Burnett previously played in the OHL with the London Knights, and later became a two-time OHL Coach of the Year and won an OHL championship in his first tour of duty with the Guelph Storm. Burnett was head coach and general manager of the Belleville Bulls for 11 seasons, and drafted all three Subban brothers into the OHL; P. K. Subban, Malcolm Subban and Jordan Subban. Burnett briefly coached in the National Hockey League for three seasons. He was head coach of the Edmonton Oilers for part of the 1994–95 season, and was an assistant coach for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for two seasons. Burnett coached in the American Hockey League for four seasons, winning one division title and one Calder Cup championship. George Murray Burnett
Prof George Murray Burnett FRSE FRSA FRIC LLD (1921–1980) was a Scottish mathematician and chemist. He served as both Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University from 1974 until 1980. He is largely remembered for his work on polymer reactions. Life He was born in Messina in South Africa on 12 July 1921. His family moved to London in his childhood and he was educated at Mile-End School before again relocating to Aberdeen in Scotland. Here he attended Robert Gordon's College before being accepted by Aberdeen University studying chemistry and mathematics. He graduated in 1943. On graduation he immediately moved to a teaching role within the university. In 1943/4 being an Assistant Lecturer in Natural Philosophy and 1944/5 a Lecturer in Chemistry. George Richards Burnett (23 March 1824 – 13 April 1915) was an English first-class cricketer and distiller. Biography Burnett was born at Streatham in March 1824. He made two appearances in first-class cricket for the Gentlemen of Kent against the Gentlemen of England at Canterbury in 1849 and Lord's Lord's Cricket Ground, commonly known as Lord's, is a cricket venue in St John's Wood, London. Named after its founder, Thomas Lord, it is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and ... in 1850. George Burnett Barton
George Burnett Barton (9 December 1836 – 12 September 1901) was an Australian lawyer, journalist and historian. Early life and education Barton was born in Sydney, the second son of William Barton and Mary Louise Barton, and elder brother of Sir Edmund Barton. He was educated at William Timothy Cape's school and at the University of Sydney. After a dispute with Professor John Woolley, he left for England, where he was admitted to the Middle Temple on 20 April 1857 and called to the Bar in 1860. Career Barton returned to Australia and became a journalist and was the first editor of the Sydney ''Punch''. From 1865 to 1868 he was reader in English literature at the University of Sydney; his introductory lecture, ''The Study of English Literature'', was published in 1866.
