George Burnes
George Gordon Burnes (11 July 1866 – 9 February 1949) was a businessman and first-class cricketer in New Zealand. Personal life and business career The son of Adam Burnes, who was the first general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, George Burnes had five brothers and a sister. He attended Wellington College, Wellington. Burnes was the Australian Mutual Provident Society's district manager in Invercargill, and then served as manager in Christchurch for 13 years until his retirement in 1930 after 49 years' service with the company. After retiring, he spent most of the rest of his life travelling the world. He served as an air raid warden in London during World War II. He and his wife Anna had one child, a daughter who died in her teens. Cricket career Burnes played six first-class matches for Wellington between 1884 and 1887. Southland Cricket Association
The Southland cricket team represents the Southland Region of New Zealand. They compete in the Hawke Cup. Early history Southland first played interprovincial cricket in 1864, and often played against touring teams from Australia, Fiji and England. The Southland Cricket Association was formed in 1892, leading to an increase in representative matches, including the annual match against Otago, which began in 1893–94 and continued until the 1980s. In 1910–11 Southland were the first winners of the Hawke Cup. They retained it in 1911–12 but surrendered it in 1912–13 when they did not take part. Don Neely
Donald Owen Neely (21 December 1935 – 16 June 2022) was a New Zealand cricket historian, administrator and player. He served as president of New Zealand Cricket and wrote or co-wrote over 30 books on New Zealand cricket. Early life Neely was born in Wellington in 1935 and attended Rongotai College from 1947 to 1953, where he played 1st XI cricket. He later played in the senior grade for Wellington's Kilbirnie Cricket Club, which has since amalgamated with MSP (Midland St. Pat's) and become Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club. The Eastern Suburbs clubrooms in Kilbirnie Park are now home to the Kilbirnie honours boards that record Neely's successes with the club. Playing career Neely's first-class career lasted from 1964 to 1971 and consisted of 34 matches, played in four seasons with Wellington (three as captain) and three seasons with Auckland. The New Zealand cricket team toured Australia in February 1899, playing two first-class matches against state teams and two other matches. It was New Zealand's first overseas tour.
