George Bruce Of Carnock
Sir George Bruce of Carnock (c. 1550 – 1625) was a Scottish merchant, ship-owner, and mining engineer. Family George Bruce was a son of Edward Bruce of Blairhall and Alison Reid, a sister of Robert Reid, Bishop of Orkney. His older brother Edward Bruce (1548-1610), was created Lord Bruce of Kinloss in 1602. Edward Bruce built the large mansion known as Culross House or Abbey House (now reduced in size) and George built Culross Palace. Coal, salt, and silver Bruce was an innovator in coal mining techniques, introducing undersea mining into the Upper Hirst seam with use of new drainage technology. These innovations attracted much interest, including a visit from King James VI in 1617. Sir George Bruce invited him to visit one of his mines which tunnelled down beneath the sea bed. George Bruce (industrialist)
George Bruce (July 5, 1781 – July 6, 1866) was an American printer, industrialist and inventor. Early life Bruce, who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 5, 1781, to John and Janet Gilbertson Bruce. He immigrated to America in 1795 and served his apprenticeship in Philadelphia. His younger brother, John, lost his life in the army in Egypt. Career After first apprenticing to a bookbinder, his older brother David arranged for him an apprenticeship with Thomas Dobson, printer in Philadelphia. In 1798, the destruction of Dobson's office by fire, and the prevalence of yellow fever, led the brothers to leave the city. George had yellow fever at Amboy, but recovered through his brother's care. The two went to Albany and found employment there, but after a few months returned to New York. George Barclay Bruce
Sir George Barclay Bruce (1 October 1821 – 25 August 1908) was a British civil engineer. He was primarily a railway engineer who worked for many railway companies in Britain, Europe, Asia and South America. He was closely involved with the Institution of Civil Engineers, serving at various times as a member, council member, vice-president and president. He received a knighthood from the British Government and was made an officer of France's Legion of Honour in recognition of his services to construction. Bruce was a Presbyterian and committed himself to spreading the church in England and to improving public education, to which end he gave his time and money generously. George Bruce (5 August 1879 – 5 June 1928) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1900s. Family The son of George Bruce and Annie Bruce, he was born on 5 August 1879. Bruce's older brothers, Jim and Percy, also played for West Adelaide. Married to Grace Bennett Bruce (1881-1945), née Murie, he had three children, Grace, George and Donald. He died on 5 June 1928. Football Bruce was a wingman and was cleared to Carlton from South Australian Football League club West Adelaide in 1903. Plot summary In 1834, Charles Stewart (Alan Ladd), the spoiled, dissolute son of a shipping magnate, is shanghaied aboard the ''Pilgrim'', one of his father's own ships.
