George Brand (politician)
George Edmund Dowd Brand (11 March 1911 – 5 March 1997) was an Australian politician who served as a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1965 to 1971, representing Lower North Province. Brand was born in Kalgoorlie to Brigid Katherine (née Dowd) and George Brand. He attended Eastern Goldfields High School and then began working as a clerk for Western Australian Government Railways. He later joined his father's freight business. Brand enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1943 (after previous service with the Citizens Military Forces), and during the war served in transport and supply units. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to the family business, taking it over completely following the death of his father in 1957. Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. Tom Evans (Western Australian Politician)
Thomas Daniel Evans (18 April 1929 – 27 February 1995) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1956 to 1980, representing the seat of Kalgoorlie. He served as a minister in the government of John Tonkin, including as treasurer and attorney-general. Early life Evans was born in Denmark, Western Australia, to Kathleen Veronica (née Hayden) and Daniel Thomas Evans. He was educated at various country schools, and later spent two years in Perth studying teaching, attending Claremont Teachers College. David Brand
Sir David Brand KCMG (1 August 1912 – 15 April 1979) was an Australian politician. A member of the Liberal Party, he was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1945 to 1975, and also the 19th and longest-serving Premier of Western Australia, serving four terms from the 1959 to the 1971 election. He resigned as leader of the Liberal Party in 1973, and retired from politics in 1975, dying from heart disease in 1979. 1971 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 20 February 1971 to elect all 51 members to the Legislative Assembly and 15 members to the 30-seat Legislative Council. The four-term Liberal- Country Party coalition government, led by Premier David Brand, was defeated by the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader John Tonkin. This was the first election in which no seats were uncontested since the introduction of responsible government in 1890. This was partly due to the Democratic Labor Party deciding to contest every seat up for election in both Houses. There was a large increase in the number of electors, because this was the first election after 18 year olds had been given the vote. David Dellar
David Peter Dellar (30 October 1915 – 30 January 1994) was an Australian politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1963 to 1965, representing North-East Province. Dellar was born in Kanowna, Western Australia, to Eileen Grace (née Henderson) and Benjamin James Dellar. He was educated at state schools in Menzies and Salmon Gums before going on to the Kalgoorlie School of Mines. After finishing his education, Dellar worked for periods on the mines at Linden, Menzies, Kanowna, and Kalgoorlie. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942, initially with an anti-aircraft unit and later as a troop instructor.
