George Bishop (astronomer)
George Bishop (21 August 1785, in Leicester – 14 June 1861), was a noted English astronomer of the nineteenth century. L’Astronomia Pratique, André et Rayat, i. 95 Ann. Reg. ciii. 402 Early life and fortune At the age of eighteen Bishop entered a British wine-making business in London, subsequently becoming its proprietor, during his tenure at which the business was so successful that its excise returns were said to exhibit half of all home-made wines as of his manufacture. Bishop's scientific career began with his admission to the Royal Astronomical Society in 1830, funded by the money he had earned from the wine business. He took lessons in algebra from Augustus De Morgan, with a view to reading Pierre-Simon Laplace's five volume work ''Mécanique Céleste'' (Celestial Mechanics), by the age of fifty achieving his goal of sufficient mathematical knowledge to comprehend the scope of its methods. George Bishop's Observatory
George Bishop's Observatory (code: 969) was an astronomical observatory erected in 1836 by the astronomer George Bishop near his residence at the South Villa of Regent's Park, London. It was equipped with a Dollond refractor. Description The Reverend William Rutter Dawes conducted his noted investigations of double stars at the observatory from 1839 to 1844; John Russell Hind began his career there in October of the following year. From the time that Karl Ludwig Hencke's detection of Astræa, 8 Dec. 1845, showed a prospect of success in the search for new planets, the resources of Bishop's observatory were turned in that direction, and with conspicuous results. Between 1847 and 1854 Hind discovered ten minor planets at the observatory, and Albert Marth one. Other notable astronomers to use the observatory included Eduard Vogel, Charles George Talmage, and Norman Robert Pogson. George Nickells Bishop (1852–1939) was an Anglican priest in the first two decades of the nineteenth century and the first four of the twentieth. Crockford's Clerical Directory 1938 p 112: London, OUP, 1938 Bishop was born in Newton Abbot and later emigrated to Australia. He was ordained deacon in 1880, and priest in 1881. After a curacy at Geelong he held incumbencies in Melbourne and Kyneton, where he was also Archdeacon from 1915 to 1918. Sir George Sidney Bishop CB OBE (15 October 1913 – 9 April 1999) was a British civil servant and businessman. Early life George Bishop was born near Wigan in Lancashire. Education Bishop attended Ashton-in-Makerfield Grammar School (since 1978 Byrchall High School) and the London School of Economics to read Economics and Government under Harold Laski. Career Bishop's first job was for a Quaker organisation in South Wales which assisted the unemployed through subsistence production. On the outbreak of the second world war he moved to the Ministry of Food as a statistician, subsequently running its Emergency Services division. After the war Bishop became a private secretary to ministers of food Ben Smith and John Strachey. Bishop was active in winding up the disastrous groundnut oil scheme.
