George Bertie, 10th Earl Of Lindsey
George Augustus Frederick Albemarle Bertie, 10th Earl of Lindsey, DL (4 November 1814 – 21 March 1877) was the eldest son of Albemarle Bertie, 9th Earl of Lindsey. George was styled Lord Bertie from his birth until his accession to the earldom in 1818. Lindsey was of "weak intellect", and posed something of a family problem. After a visit by Lindsey in 1841, George Cruikshank wrote to Charles Dickens (who had given Lindsey a note of introduction) to comment that his wife had at first thought Lindsey "either drunk or mad". Lieutenant-General Albemarle Bertie, 9th Earl of Lindsey (17 September 1744 – 18 September 1818) was a British nobleman and general. Early life Bertie was born on 17 September 1744. He was the son of Peregrine Bertie, a barrister of Lincoln's Inn (1709–1779) and the former Elizabeth Payne. He had two sisters, Louisa Bertie (wife of Fletcher Richardson of Cartmel) and Henrietta Bertie (wife of George Edmonds of Peterborough). His paternal grandparents were the former Mary Narbonne (daughter and heiress of John Narbonne of Great Stukeley) and Charles Bertie, MP for Stamford (a son of the Hon. Charles Bertie, also an MP for Stamford, Envoy to Denmark and Secretary to the Treasury who was the fifth son of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey). George Cruikshank
George Cruikshank (27 September 1792 – 1 February 1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. Early life Cruikshank was born in London. His father, Edinburgh-born Isaac Cruikshank, was one of the leading caricaturists of the late 1790s and Cruikshank started his career as his father's apprentice and assistant. His older brother, Isaac Robert, also followed in the family business as a caricaturist and illustrator. Cruikshank's early work was caricature; but in 1823, at the age of 31, he started to focus on book illustration. Montague Bertie, 11th Earl Of Lindsey
Montague Peregrine Bertie, 11th Earl of Lindsey, DL (26 December 1815 – 27 January 1899), styled The Honourable Montague Bertie until 1877, was an English nobleman, soldier, and landowner, the second son of Albemarle Bertie, 9th Earl of Lindsey and his wife Charlotte. Like his elder sister, Lady Charlotte Guest, Montague was a voracious reader, and had an excellent memory; but he unfortunately resembled his elder brother, George, in being curiously unworldly and unsuited for adult life. Bertie was educated at Eton, and subsequently entered the 81st Regiment of Foot on 13 July 1832 as an ensign. He was made ensign and lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards on 21 March 1834 and purchased the rank of lieutenant and captain on 28 June 1839. Earl Of Lindsey
Earl of Lindsey is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1626 for the 14th Baron Willoughby de Eresby (see Baron Willoughby de Eresby for earlier history of the family). He was First Lord of the Admiralty from 1635 to 1636 and also established his claim in right of his mother to the hereditary office of Lord Great Chamberlain of England. Lord Lindsey fought on the Royalist side in the Civil War and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Edgehill on 23 October 1642. He was succeeded by his son, the second Earl. He also fought at Edgehill and surrendered to the Parliamentarians in order to attend his mortally wounded father. Lord Lindsey later fought at the First Battle of Newbury, Second Battle of Newbury, and at Naseby. His son from his second marriage, James, was created Earl of Abingdon in 1682.
