George Berry Washington Memorial
The George Berry Washington Memorial is a monumental funerary sculpture located on Arkansas Highway 149 north of Earle, Arkansas. It is the only major funerary sculpture in Crittenden County, and it commemorates the life and accomplishments of the Rev. George Berry Washington (1864-1928), an African American who was probably born into slavery, but ended his life as one of the county's largest landowners. Washington's grave site is on a low mound in an open field on the east side Highway 149. Two elaborately-carved stone piers, in height, flank wide steps leading up to the monument. The monument is a marble statue of an angel in height, mounted on a column of marble blocks high. The memorial was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Earle is a city in Crittenden County, Arkansas, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 1,831. Geography Earle is located in western Crittenden County at (35.270405, -90.464841). U.S. Route 64 passes through the northern part of the city, bypassing the downtown area. US 64 leads west to Wynne and east to Memphis, Tennessee. History In 1918, an African-American man named Elton Mitchell was eviscerated with a knife and hanged from a tree after he refused to work for a white landowner for free. Highway 149 (AR 149, Ark. 149, and Hwy. 149) is a north–south state highway in northeast Arkansas. The route of runs from Highway 38 in Hughes north across Interstate 40 (I-40) to I-555/ US 63 Business (I-555/US 63B) in Marked Tree. Route description The route begins in Hughes at Highway 38 and runs northeast across US Route 79 (US 79) at North Hughes. Highway 149 continues north to Greasy Corner, where a concurrency begins with Highway 50 west along a bayou. After the concurrency ends, Highway 149 turns due north and runs through fields. Another overlap occurs near Shell Lake, where Highway 149 overlaps US 70 for . Crittenden County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 50,902. The county seat is Marion, and the largest city is West Memphis. Located in the Arkansas Delta, Crittenden County is Arkansas's 12th county, formed October 22, 1825, and named for Robert Crittenden, the first Secretary of the Arkansas Territory.
