George Berry (footballer)
George Frederick Berry (born 19 November 1957) is a Welsh former international footballer, who played as a centre back. He was a tough-tackling defender also noted for his distinctive afro haircut. Born in West Germany, Berry moved to Blackpool at a young age and began his footballing career with Wolverhampton Wanderers and helped "Wolves" win the League Cup in 1980. He signed for Staffordshire rivals Stoke City in the summer of 1982 and became a popular figure with the Stoke City supporters. A fall out with manager Bill Asprey almost saw his Stoke career cut short and he went on loan to Doncaster Rovers and also spent time training alone in Portugal. However, Berry returned in 1984–85 as Stoke suffered a woeful season finishing bottom with a then record low points tally. New manager Mick Mills paired him with Steve Bould and installed Berry as captain as Stoke went through a dull period in the Second Division. William George Berry (18 August 1904 – 15 September 1972), known in England as Bill Berry and in Francophone nations as George Berry or Georges Berry, was an English professional footballer who made over 130 appearances as an outside left in the Football League for Brentford. He also played league football for Gillingham, Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic and after his retirement he had a 30-year management career with clubs in France, Belgium, Football in Tunisia, Tunisia and Football in Luxembourg, Luxembourg. George Berry (Australian Politician)
George William Berry (18 May 1913 – 4 April 1998) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1968 to 1980, representing Lower North Province. Berry was born in Perth to Annie Adelaide (née Holding) and George Berry. He attended the Fremantle Boys' School, but left at the age of 13. Berry enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1941, and during the war served as a flight sergeant. After the war, he worked in Spearwood as a master butcher, and served on the Fremantle Road Board from 1946 to 1952. Berry moved to Carnarvon in 1954, where he farmed bananas. He served as secretary and treasurer of the local Liberal Party branch, and entered parliament at the 1968 state election, winning his seat from Labor's Eric Heenan. George Berry (1706–1776) was a captain in the French and Indian War. Early years He was born in Kittery, Massachusetts, and he married Elizabeth Frink in 1727. He had four sons (George, Josiah, Obadiah and Henry) and one daughter (Elizabeth). War record Commission issued to George Berry of Falmouth, bearing date April 19, 1757. It was one of those roving commissions of which many were issued during the old French wars, so called, and set forth that: "George Berry, gentleman, was constituted Captain of a scouting party of forty men, and to be employed in marching from New Boston to Kennebec River, on the back of the inhabitants, for their security and protection, for a term not to exceed three months from the first day of April inst., unless continued by a further order of the General Court." George Ricker Berry, D.D., Ph.D., (15 October 1865 24 May 1945) was an internationally known Semitic scholar and archaeologist, and Professor Emeritus of Colgate-Rochester Divinity School. The Interlinear Greek-English New Testament (the ''Englishman's Greek New Testament'' apparently created by Thomas Newberry), of which American editions are generally published with Berry's Lexicon and New Testament Synonyms, is a widely used Bible study aid. Family George Ricker Berry was born 15 October 1865 to William Drake Berry and Joanna Floyd Lawrence in West Sumner, Maine, USA. He was the sixth of ten children. Sir George Andreas Berry LLD, FRSE, FRCSEd (6 October 1853 – 18 June 1940) was a Scottish ophthalmic surgeon who acquired a reputation as a leading authority on ophthalmology, not only in the United Kingdom but also in the United States and continental Europe. His standing in the profession was largely the result of his textbooks of ophthalmology which were widely used in his home country and abroad. His working career was spent at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and when he retired from clinical practice in 1905 he became involved in medical and national politics. He was surgeon-oculist in Scotland to King George V and then to King Edward VII and was president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 1910 to 1912. He was knighted in 1916. At the 1922 general election he was elected as Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities , sitting as a Scottish Unionist.
