George Bennett (Australian Rules Footballer)
George Henry Jordan Bennett (22 September 1911 – 10 October 1974) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray Football Club, Footscray and Hawthorn Football Club, Hawthorn in the Australian Football League, VFL. Bennett commenced his VFA career in 1929 with Camberwell Football Club, Camberwell. Bennett started his VFL career in 1930 with Hawthorn and remained with the club until the end of the 1933 season. The club was enforcing a rule in which a player who missed three consecutive senior games due to either injury or suspension had to return to the side through the reserves. Bennett disagreed with this rule and moved to Footscray for the 1934 season. The following season he won their best and fairest award as well as finishing 8th in the 1935 Brownlow Medal. Bennett played with Camberwell in 1941. He ended up playing 26 games for Camberwell. He came back to the Hawks in 1942 and brought up his 200th league game in 1944. Hawthorn is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, east of Melbourne's central business district, located within the City of Boroondara local government area. The South West District Football League was a major Australian rules football competition which ran from 1910 until 1981 in the Riverina region of New South Wales. History The first recorded Australian Rules Football match in the Riverina area was on the 1st August, 1881 between Wagga Wagga and the more experienced Albury team and was played in Wagga. The South West District Football Association (SWDFL) was formed in 1913, when it superseded the Ganmain Football Association, which was formed in 1910, with all clubs moving into play in the SWDFL competition. In 1924 a South Western District Football League team played Collingwood Football Club at Narrandera with Collingwood winning, 86 to SWDFL 76. In May, 1930 the SWDFL competition was abandoned, after Whitton withdrew earlier at the AGM, then both Ganmain and Matong club withdrew due to a lack of players. Narrandera ( ) until around 1949 also spelled "Narandera", is a town located in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, Australia. The town lies on the junction of the Newell and Sturt highways, adjacent to the Murrumbidgee River, and it is considered the gateway to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990.
