George Barnes (Australian Politician)
George Powell Barnes (20 September 1856 – 9 December 1949), generally referred to by his full name or as "George P. Barnes",Most likely to distinguish him in newspaper reports from his contemporary, the prominent British parliamentarian George Barnes. was a Queensland businessman and politician. Early life George was a son of Cobb and Co. pioneer Hiram Barnes and a brother of Walter Barnes MLA. Business interests George Barnes started the company Barnes and Company Limited in 1880 in association with his brother, Walter Henry Barnes and Mr TF Merry. Merry was a storekeeper in Toowoomba, with whom George worked earlier and whose daughter, Mary Cecelia was married to George in 1879. Barnes and Co was formed to control businesses in Warwick, Allora, Yangan and Roma Street and Commonwealth Flour Mills at Warwick and South Brisbane. Yangan, Queensland
Yangan is a rural town and locality in the Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Yangan had a population of 386 people. Geography The locality is traversed by Swan Creek, a tributary of the Condamine River. Sandstone is extracted from a quarry directly south of the town's centre from a property which fronts Swan Creek. History The district was known as Upper Swan Creek, but in 1887 took the name ''Yangan'' from its railway station. The name ''Yangan'' is reported to be an Aboriginal word meaning ''proceed'' or ''go away''. Swan Creek (No. 2) School opened on 27 May 1874. In 1878 it was renamed Swan Creek Upper State School. In 1887 it became Yangan State School. On Monday 15 May 1905 the Bishop of Brisbane St Clair Donaldson consecrated the new Anglican church, St Peter's. The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. As at 5 April 2020 there are 1790 places on the Queensland Heritage Register, including the Story Bridge in Brisbane and the Ross River Meatworks Chimney in Townsville. Criteria For a place to be entered in the register, it must be nominated and then go through a process of assessment. A naval mine is a self-contained explosive device placed in water to damage or destroy surface ships or submarines. Unlike depth charges, mines are deposited and left to wait until they are triggered by the approach of, or contact with, any vessel or a particular vessel type, akin to anti-infantry vs. anti-vehicle mines. Degaussing
Degaussing is the process of decreasing or eliminating a remnant magnetic field. It is named after the gauss, a unit of magnetism, which in turn was named after Carl Friedrich Gauss. Due to magnetic hysteresis, it is generally not possible to reduce a magnetic field completely to zero, so degaussing typically induces a very small "known" field referred to as bias. Degaussing was originally applied to reduce ships' magnetic signatures during World War II. Degaussing is also used to reduce magnetic fields in cathode ray tube monitors and to destroy data held on magnetic storage. Ships' hulls The term was first used by then-Commander Charles F. Bulimba is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Bulimba had a population of 6,843 people. Geography Bulimba is located north-east of the CBD on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, but it is by road. Toponymy Bulimba is reportedly a Yugarapul word used meaning 'place of the magpie lark'. The same word is the origin of the nearby Bulimba Creek, and of the Bulimba Reach on which the suburb is located. The leader, Bilin Bilin, has his name based upon the magpie lark, or the pee-wee.
