George Bampfylde, 1st Baron Poltimore
George Warwick Bampfylde, 1st Baron Poltimore (23 March 1786 – 19 December 1858), of Poltimore, Devon, known from 1823 to 1831 as Sir George Bampfylde, 6th Baronet, was a British peer. Origins Lord Bampfylde was the eldest son and heir of Sir Charles Bampfylde, 5th Baronet (1753–1823) by his wife Catherine Moore, eldest daughter of Admiral Sir John Moore, 1st Baronet. He was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford. Career He served as lieutenant-colonel in the 1st Somerset Regiment of Militia, and succeeded to the baronetcy in 1823 after his father was killed by a former servant. Bampfylde served as vice-lieutenant of Devon and in 1831 was raised to the peerage as Baron Poltimore, of Poltimore in the County of Devon. Manor Of Poltimore
The Manor of Poltimore is a former manor in Devon, England. The manor house known as Poltimore House survives in its 18th-century remodelled form, but has been dilapidated for several decades. A charity named the "Poltimore House Trust" has been established for the purpose of its restoration. The manor was situated within the historic Wonford Hundred and was largely coterminous with the parish of Poltimore and contained the village of Poltimore, north-east of the historic centre of the City of Exeter. It should not be confused with the eponymous Devon estate of Poltimore in the parish of Farway, east of Exeter. Poltimore was the principal seat of the Bampfylde family from to 1920. Descent The identification of the manor of Poltimore, later seat of the Bampfylde family, with a location mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 is problematical. Sir Charles Bampfylde, 5th Baronet
Sir Charles Warwick Bampfylde, 5th Baronet (23 January 1753 – 19 April 1823) of Poltimore in Devon, was a British politician who served twice as Member of Parliament for Exeter, in 1774–1790 and 1796–1812. Origins He was the eldest surviving son of Sir Richard Bampfylde, 4th Baronet by his wife Jane Codrington (d. 1789), daughter and heiress of Colonel John Codrington of Charlton House, Wraxall, Somerset, near Bristol. He was baptised at St Augustine the Less Church, Bristol in Gloucestershire. Career Bampfylde was educated at New College, Oxford and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Civil Law (DCL). In 1776, he succeeded his father as baronet. He was High Sheriff of Somerset for 1820–21 after the death in office of Gerard Berkeley Napier. Admiral Sir John Moore, 1st Baronet, KB (24 March 1718 – 2 February 1779) was a British officer of the Royal Navy during the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. He eventually rose to the rank of admiral. Lieutenant-Colonel John Lambrick Vivian (1830–1896), Inspector of Militia and Her Majesty's Superintendent of Police and Police Magistrate for St Kitts, West Indies, was an English genealogist and historian. Augustus Frederick George Warwick Bampfylde, 2nd Baron Poltimore (12 April 1837 – 3 May 1908), styled The Honourable Augustus Bampfylde until 1858, of Poltimore House and North Molton in Devon, was a British Liberal politician. Between 1872 and 1874 he served as Treasurer of the Household to Queen Victoria, under William Ewart Gladstone. Origins Bampfylde was the son and heir of George Bampfylde, 1st Baron Poltimore, by his second wife Caroline Buller, daughter of General Frederick William Buller. Career Bampfylde succeeded his father in the barony in 1858. Baron Poltimore
Baron Poltimore, of Poltimore in the County of Devon, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1831 for Sir George Bampfylde, 6th Baronet. His son, the second Baron, held office as Treasurer of the Household from 1872 to 1874 in the first Liberal administration of William Ewart Gladstone. the titles are held by the latter's great-great-grandson, the seventh Baron, who succeeded his grandfather in 1978. He has notably been a director of Sotheby's and appears on the ''Antiques Roadshow'' as Mark Poltimore, one of the experts on paintings.
