George Baldwin (diplomat)
George Baldwin was a British merchant, writer and diplomat of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries whose career was principally based in Egypt, where he established valuable trade links for the East India Company and negotiated directly with the Ottoman governors. Despite repeated warnings of the importance of Egypt to links with British India, his advice was ignored and thus when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt in 1798 the British were ill-placed to respond directly. In 1801 he assisted the British counter-invasion of Egypt and later returned to Britain with his wife Jane Maltass, a famous society beauty. Although a highly successful merchant and diplomat, Baldwin found himself a subject of ridicule on his return to Britain for his belief in the healing power of magnets, then widely considered a pseudoscience. George Pearce Baldwin
George Pearce Baldwin (17 May 1789 – 1 October 1840) came from Broseley in Shropshire and moved to Worcestershire at the start of the 19th Century, becoming an iron founder at Stourport-on-Severn. He was the son of Thomas Baldwin and Mary Gough. He had 12 children, the youngest of whom, Alfred, father of the future prime minister Stanley Baldwin, was born in 1841, the year after George died. He was married to Anne Hill on 16 April 1812; together they had two children: *Pearce Baldwin (born 20 July 1813; died 6 April 1861) *William Hill Baldwin (born 8 March 1817, died 11 May 1863). He then married Sarah Chalkley Stanley, daughter of Reverend Jacob Stanley, on 4 October 1822. George Rumford Baldwin (North Woburn, January 26, 1798 – North Woburn, October 11, 1888) an early American civil engineer who worked with his father Loammi Baldwin and brothers Loammi Baldwin, Jr. Cyrus Baldwin, Benjamin Franklin Baldwin, and James Fowle Baldwin, on the Middlesex Canal and other projects. His later works included surveying and engineering the Boston, Hartford, and Erie Railroad, the Buffalo and Mississippi Railroad, and the gas and water systems for the City of Quebec. George Baldwin (Wisconsin Politician)
George Baldwin (January 22, 1830 – December 7, 1907) was a Wisconsin politician and businessman. Born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Baldwin studied law, and was admitted to the Vermont bar. He moved to Calumet County, Wisconsin, where he practiced law. He was mayor of Chilton, Wisconsin, and county judge of Calumet County. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1866 and was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate in 1870. George Baldwin (footballer)
Joseph George Baldwin (26 July 1921 – 1976) was an English professional footballer. Born in Islington, he played for Gravesend & Northfleet from 1948 until 1951, when he joined Dartford. Just two months later, however, he was signed by professional club Gillingham of the Football League Third Division South. He made his Football League debut against Leyton Orient in October 1951 in place of the injured Jimmy Boswell but had a disastrous match, with one local newspaper commenting that he looked "completely out of his depth" in professional football. He was never chosen for the club's first team again, although he was a regular for the reserves. George Baldwin (cricketer)
George Frederick Baldwin (3 April 1878 – 15 May 1970) was an English cricketer. Baldwin's batting and bowling styles are unknown. He was born at Northampton, Northamptonshire. Baldwin made a single first-class appearance for Northamptonshire against Leicestershire in the 1906 County Championship. He batted once in this match, scoring 6 runs before being dismissed by William Odell. With the ball he bowled 8 wicketless overs. He died at Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire on 15 May 1970.
