George Baker (British Actor)
George Morris Baker, MBE (1 April 19317 October 2011) was an English actor and writer. He was best known for portraying Tiberius in ''I, Claudius'', and Inspector Wexford in ''The Ruth Rendell Mysteries''. Early life Baker was born in Varna, Bulgaria. His father was an English businessman and honorary vice consul and his mother an Irish Red Cross nurse who moved to Bulgaria to help fight cholera. He attended Lancing College, Sussex; he then appeared as an actor in repertory theatre and at the Old Vic. Career Early film stardom Baker's first film was '' The Intruder'' (1953). He made his name in '' The Dam Busters'' (1955), and his first starring role was in ''The Ship That Died of Shame'' (1955) with Richard Attenborough. George Barnard Baker
George Barnard Baker (January 29, 1834 – February 9, 1910) was a Quebec lawyer and political figure. He was a Liberal-Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada representing Missisquoi from 1870 to 1874, from 1879 to 1887 and from 1891 to 1896 and in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1875 to 1878. He was named to the Senate of Canada for Bedford division in 1896 and served until his death in 1910. He was born in Dunham, Lower Canada in 1834, the son of William Baker, and studied at Bishop's College. He articled with James O'Halloran, was called to the bar in 1860 and entered practice at Sweetsburg with O'Halloran. In 1860, he married Jane Percival Cowan. Baker was elected to the House of Commons in an 1870 by-election after Brown Chamberlin resigned his seat. He served as minister without portfolio and then solicitor general in the Quebec cabinet. George Baker (cricketer, Born 1849)
George Dashwood Baker (4 March 1849 – 21 December 1879) was an English cricketer. Baker was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast. He was born at Compton Martin, Somerset. Educated at Rugby School before attending University College, Oxford, Baker later made a single first-class appearance for Middlesex against Oxford University in 1872 at the Prince's Cricket Ground, Chelsea. In Middlesex's first-innings of 250, Baker was dismissed for 5 runs by Samuel Butler, while in their second-innings of 277 he was dismissed by Arthur Ridley. His only first-class appearance ended in a draw. He died at Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire on 21 December 1879. Father Divine (September 10, 1965), also known as Reverend M. J. Divine, was an African-American spiritual leader from about 1907 until his death in 1965. His full self-given name was Reverend Major Jealous Divine, and he was also known as "the Messenger" early in his life. He founded the International Peace Mission movement, formulated its doctrine, and oversaw its growth from a small and predominantly black congregation into a multiracial and international church. Due to his ideology, many consider him to be a cult leader. Father Divine claimed to be God. He made numerous contributions toward his followers' economic independence and racial equality. George Ellis Baker
George Ellis Baker (March 16, 1816 – October 2, 1887) was an American merchant, town clerk and state legislator. Early life Baker was born on March 16, 1816 in Dedham, Massachusetts. He was the eldest son of six children born to John Baker (1780–1843) and Patty ( Ellis) Baker (1791–1876). His father served as the sheriff of Norfolk County from 1834 until his death in 1843. His brother was Fisher Ames Baker, a prominent and successful attorney who had served in the Civil War. Baker was descended from Richard Baker, who landed in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635 and settled in Dorchester. After five generations in Dorchester, the Bakers moved to Dedham, Massachusetts. Career Baker moved to Troy, New York where he opened a shoe store. The business was not a success, so he relocated again to Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the early 1840s before opening another shoe store on Maiden Lane in Manhattan. George Baker (1825–1910) was a British industrialist and Liberal politician and philanthropist. He was born in Birmingham on 11 May 1825, from a long-established Quaker family.''Oxford Dictionary of National Biography''. He was educated at the Friends' School, Ackworth, West Yorkshire, but started work at his father's blacking factory aged 15.
