George B. Terrell
George Butler Terrell (December 5, 1862 – April 18, 1947) was a U.S. Representative from Texas. Biography Terrell was born in Alto, Texas on December 5, 1862, the son of Sam Houston Terrell and Julia (Butler) Terrell. He was the grandson of George Whitfield Terrell. Terrell attended the public schools, Sam Houston Teachers' College in Huntsville, Texas, and Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Terrell became a teacher and taught school in Cherokee County, Texas from 1886 to 1903. In 1897 and 1902, Terrell served as a member of the state teachers' examining board. In 1903, he was a member of the state textbook commission. In 1903, Terrell began farming and stock raising near Alto. A Democrat, he served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1893 to 1903 and again from 1907 to 1913 and 1917 to 1921. Cherokee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 50,412. The county seat is Rusk, which lies 130 miles southeast of Dallas and 160 miles north of Houston. The county was named for the Cherokee, who lived in the area before being expelled in 1839. Cherokee County comprises the Jacksonville micropolitan statistical area, which is also included in the Tyler–Jacksonville combined statistical area. Texas has had at-large congressional seats at various times in its history. It was often the case when the state received new congressional seats as a result of reapportionment, that it would have a representative elected from an at-large seat, voted on by all voters in the state.
