George B. Cheever
George Barrell Cheever (April 7, 1807 – October 1, 1890) was a well-known and controversial abolitionism in the United States, abolitionist minister and writer. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College, where he was a classmate of Nathanial Hawthorne and Henry W. Longfellow, and Andover Theological Seminary. In 1821 he became pastor of the Howard Street Congregational Church in Salem, Massachusetts. In 1838 he became pastor of the Allen Street Presbyterian Church, in New York City, and in 1846 the new Congregational Church of the Puritans. New York City. Abolitionism In The United States
In the United States, abolitionism, the movement that sought to end slavery in the country, was active from the late colonial era until the American Civil War, the end of which brought about the abolition of American slavery through the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution (ratified 1865). The anti-slavery movement originated during the Age of Enlightenment, focused on ending the trans-Atlantic slave trade. In Colonial America, a few German Quakers issued the 1688 Germantown Quaker Petition Against Slavery, which marks the beginning of the American abolitionist movement.
