George Augustus Williams
George Augustus Williams (4 May 1814 – 26 May 1901) was an English landscape painter during the Victorian era, and a member of the Williams family of painters. Biography George Augustus Williams was born on 4 May 1814 in London. He was the third son of the painter Edward Williams (1781–1855) and Ann Hildebrandt (c.1780–1851), and a member of the Williams family of painters, who were related to such famous artists as James Ward, R.A. and George Morland. His father was a well-known landscape artist, who taught him how to paint; otherwise he received no formal instruction. George Augustus painted riverscapes of the Thames, moonlit landscapes, seascapes and views of Kent, Wales and elsewhere. After having four children, George and Caroline moved to Barnes, London, within a stone's throw of the Thames, where they lived for more than fifty years. Caroline Fanny Williams (1836–1921) was an English landscape painter during the Victorian era, and a member of the Williams family of painters. Caroline Fanny Williams was born on 25 December 1836 in St. Marylebone, London. Her father George Augustus Williams (1814–1901) was a popular landscape artist and a member of the Williams family of painters. She learned to paint from her father, and her works are somewhat similar to his in subject and treatment, but with much brighter colors. Her technical ability was the equal or better to that of many of her male counterparts of the time, but despite the support of her father, she lived in an age where society did not encourage women in the arts. Alfred Walter Williams (18 July 1824 – 16 December 1905) was an English landscape painter during the Victorian era, and a member of the Williams family of painters. Biography Alfred Walter Williams was born on 18 July 1824 in Southwark, London, one of identical twins; the second twin, Charles dying shortly after birth. He was the sixth son of the painter Edward Williams (1781-1855) and Ann Hildebrandt (c.1780-1851), and a member of the Williams family of painters, who were related to such famous artists as James Ward, R.A. and George Morland. His father was a well-known landscape artist, who taught him how to paint; otherwise he received no formal instruction. Alfred's work was first accepted by the Royal Academy in 1843, after which he regularly exhibited there, until 1890. Biography Life and career Sidney Richard Percy was born Sidney Richard Percy Williams on 22 March 1822 in London. The 1895 edition of the Dictionary of National Biography' gives Percy's birth date as 1821?, and subsequent biographers gave credence to this date by inadvertently removing the question mark. However, Percy's tombstone in Beckenham Cemetery has a birth date embossed on it of 22 March 1822, which is considered the more reliable date as this tombstone was erected under the direction of Percy's wife and two surviving children.
