George Arthur Padmore
George Arthur Padmore (July 16, 1915 – April 15, 2005) was a Liberian diplomat. From 1956 to 1961 he was Liberian Ambassador to the United States. Life Padmore was born on July 16, 1915, the grandson of General George Stanley Padmore, and the son of James Stanley Padmore and Mary Louise Barclay-Padmore, who had emigrated to Liberia from Barbados. His older sister was Antoinette Tubman. After Padmore's parents died in a canoeing accident on the Saint Paul River, he became the adopted son of the politician Edwin Barclay and his wife Euphemia. In April 1939 Padmore married Edith Mai Wiles, who would later serve as Liberia's first woman cabinet minister. The couple had five children. Silver Spring is a census-designated place (CDP) in southeastern Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, near Washington, D.C. Although officially unincorporated, in practice it is an edge city, with a population of 81,015 at the 2020 census, making it the fifth-most populous place in Maryland after Baltimore, Columbia, Germantown, and Waldorf. Antoinette Tubman
Antoinette Louise Padmore Tubman (24 February 191418 May 2011) was the wife of the Liberian politician William S. Tubman and was First Lady of Liberia from 1948 until 1971. Biography Antoinette Padmore was born in Monrovia on 24 February 1914. Her parents were James Stanley Padmore and Mary Louise Barclay-Padmore, who has both emigrated from Barbados. Her mother died when she was young, as a result she was brought up by her aunt Elizabeth Barclay-Sherman. She was educated at Bromley Mission, an episcopal school, then moved to Paris to study fashion. On her return she opened the first school of fashion and modelling in Monrovia. She married William Tubman on 17 September 1948. She was his third wife. They had one daughter, Wilhemina Tubman-Tucker. Work as First Lady Tubman was First Lady of Liberia from her marriage in 1948 to the death of her husband in 1971. Saint Paul River
The Saint Paul River is a river of western Africa. Its headwaters are in southeastern Guinea. Its upper portion in Guinea is known as the Diani River or Niandi River, and forms part of the boundary between Guinea and Liberia. It is known locally as the Du by the Gola people in Liberia. The river then enters Liberia about north of Gbarnga and crosses Liberia in a southwesterly direction. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Mesurado in Monrovia near Bushrod Island, separating Monrovia from its suburb Brewerville. Edwin Barclay
Edwin James Barclay (5 January 1882 – 6 November 1955) was a Liberian politician, poet, and musician who served as the 18th president of Liberia from 1930 until 1944. He was a member of the True Whig political party, which dominated the political governance of the country for decades. Under Barclay's leadership, Liberia was an ally of the United States during World War II. Early life Edwin Barclay's paternal grandparents moved from Barbados to Liberia with their children in 1865. They were among a minority of immigrants from the Caribbean but shared with the Americo-Liberians a culture with an English base, considerable mixed-race ancestry, and a shared history. Edith Mai Padmore, nee Wiles (August 20, 1916 – July 3, 1988) was a Liberian politician. She became Liberia's first female cabinet minister when she was appointed Minister of Health and Welfare in 1972. Life Mai Wiles was born on August 20, 1916, in Monrovia. She was the daughter of Richard Wiles, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Liberia, and Mai Grimes, sister of Louis Arthur Grimes, a Chief Justice of Liberia. Her father's mother was Vai and her other grandparents were from the West Indies. She was educated at the Trinity Parish School and the College of West Africa, where she graduated at the top of her class in 1934 or 1935. She taught for a year after graduation.
