George Anderson (Australian Politician)
George Anderson (1 November 1844 – 13 April 1919) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in Lancaster to merchant navy captain Eugene Anderson and Susan Morton. He received a primary education before being apprenticed to a carpenter in 1858. He migrated to Auckland, New Zealand, in 1859, where he served in the invasion of the Waikato from 1863 to 1864. In 1861 he married Mary Anne Walsh. After moving to New South Wales in 1866, he joined the police force and in 1888 established scouring works at Rose Valley. From 1881 to 1894 he served on the Council of the Municipality of Waterloo and was twice Mayor of Waterloo. He was also a commissioner to the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition in 1888. In 1894 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Independent Free Trade member for Waterloo. Free Trade Party
The Free Trade Party which was officially known as the Australian Free Trade and Liberal Association, also referred to as the Revenue Tariff Party in some states, was an Australian political party, formally organised in 1887 in New South Wales, in time for the 1887 colony election, which the party won. It advocated the abolition of protectionism, especially protective tariffs and other restrictions on trade, arguing that this would create greater prosperity for all. However, many members also advocated use of minimal tariffs for government revenue purposes only. Its most prominent leader was George Reid, who led the Reid Government as the fourth Prime Minister of Australia (1904–05). In New South Wales it was succeeded by the Liberal and Reform Association in 1902, and federally by the Anti-Socialist Party in 1906. Stanmore, New South Wales
Stanmore is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia 6 kilometres south west of the Sydney central business district. It is part of the local government area of the Inner West Council. It is known for its long strip of shops running along Parramatta Road (Great Western Highway). History Prior to settlement by the British the site was populated by coastal aborigines known as the Gadigal clan of the Eora people. Land in the present Stanmore area was first allocated to colonial officers by Governor Arthur Phillip between 1793 and 1810. Stanmore was named by a saddler, John Jones, who settled on the land in 1835 where Newington College now stands and called it the Stanmore Estate. Progressive Party (1901)
The Progressive Party was an Australian political party, active in New South Wales state politics. The question of tariff policy which, had created and divided the Free Trade Party and Protectionist Party in New South Wales in the 1890s, became a federal issue at the time of federation. Deprived of their main ideological difference, the two parties were recreated as the Liberal Reform Party aligned with the federal Free Trade Party and the Progressive Party aligned with the federal Protectionist Party. There was a rapid decline in the parliamentary representation of the party, from a high of forty-two seats at the 1901 election, to sixteen at the 1904 election, In April and May 1907 the party had negotiated a coalition agreement with the Liberal Reform Party but this was rejected by a vote of parliamentary members.
