George Alfred Wills
Sir George Alfred Wills, 1st Baronet of Blagdon (3 June 1854 – 11 July 1928) was a President of Imperial Tobacco and the head of an eminent Bristol family. He was the son of Henry Overton Wills III and Alice Hopkinson and was educated at Mill Hill School before joining his father’s business; he eventually became the managing director. He was responsible for the giving of £110,000 and £25,000 for the creation of a hall of residence for Bristol University students. Many of the boarding houses at Mill Hill School are located on Wills Grove, named after George Alfred Wills. George Alfred Wills was created a Baronet in 1923 Birthday Honours. He was responsible, with his brother Henry Herbert Wills, for the building of the Wills Memorial Building in memory of his father Henry Overton Wills III. Gilbert Wills, 1st Baron Dulverton
Gilbert Alan Hamilton Wills, 1st Baron Dulverton (28 March 1880 – 1 December 1956), also known same Sir Gilbert Wills, 2nd Baronet of Northmoor & Manor Heath, was a British businessman and Conservative Member of Parliament from 1909 to 1929. Family Wills was the son of Sir Frederick Wills, 1st Baronet, and his wife Annie (née Hamilton). The Wills family were part owners of W. D. & H. O. Wills, tobacco importers and cigarette manufacturers, which later became part of Imperial Tobacco. Wills was President of the latter company and also served as a Member of Parliament for Taunton from 1912 to 1918 and for Weston-super-Mare from 1918 to 1922. Wills Baronets
There have been four baronetcies created for members of the Wills family, owners of W. D. & H. O. Wills and major shareholders and directors of the Imperial Tobacco Company. All four creations were in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. The Wills Baronetcy, of Blagdon in the County of Somerset, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 12 August 1893 for William Henry Wills, the first chairman of the Imperial Tobacco Company, formed by the merger of W.D. & H.O. Wills (founded in Bristol by his grandfather Henry Overton Wills I (1761–1826)) with 12 other smaller UK tobacco manufacturers. He was elevated to the peerage in 1906 as Baron Winterstoke, but died without issue in 1911, when the baronetcy and the barony became extinct. Long Ashton
Long Ashton is a village and civil parish in Somerset, England. It falls within the unitary authority of North Somerset and is one of a number of large villages just outside the boundary of city of Bristol urban area. The parish has a population of 6,044. The parish includes the hamlet of Yanley, and the residential area of Leigh Woods (although most of the woods themselves are in the neighbouring parish of Abbots Leigh). The village is built on the south-facing slopes of a valley running from east to west, and on the old road from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare. History Prehistoric and Roman artefacts have been found in the area, at the site of the Gatcombe Roman Settlement, but the village originated in Saxon times. The Domesday Book records it as ''Estune'' (the place by the ash tree) and, afterwards, it was granted to Bishop Geoffrey of Coutances. Leigh Woods
Leigh Woods is a area of woodland on the south-west side of the Avon Gorge, close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge, within North Somerset opposite the English city of Bristol and north of the Ashton Court estate, of which it formed a part. Stokeleigh Camp, a hillfort thought to have been occupied from the third century BC to the first century AD and possibly also in the Middle Ages, lies within the reserve on the edge of the Nightingale Valley. On the bank of the Avon, within the reserve, are quarries for limestone and celestine which were worked in the 18th and 19th centuries are now derelict. In 1909 part of the woodland was donated to the National Trust by George Alfred Wills, to prevent development of the city beside the gorge following the building of the Leigh Woods suburb. Blagdon
Blagdon is a village and civil parish in the ceremonial county of Somerset, within the unitary authority of North Somerset, in England. It is located in the Mendip Hills, a recognised Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. According to the 2011 census it has a population of 1,116. The village is about east of Weston-super-Mare on the A368 between Churchill and Compton Martin. History The village was called ''Blachedon'' in the 1086 Domesday Book and the name comes from the Old English ''bloec'' and ''dun'' meaning 'the black or bleak down'. Romans There was a Roman presence in Blagdon from about 49 AD until the end of the Roman occupation of Britain. Several Roman coins and fragments of Roman pottery have been found in the village. There were lead and silver workings in Charterhouse, about a mile and a half uphill to the south, so it is likely that the wealthier supervisors had their houses away from the toxic smoke in the village. Sir Frank William Wills
Sir Frank William Wills (17 August 1852 – 26 March 1932) of Berkeley Square, Bristol, England, was a member of the Wills tobacco family, who became a noted British architect and went on to serve as Lord Mayor of Bristol. Early life and career Frank Wills was born on 17 August 1852 in Bristol into a large family, as the fifth of seven children born to Henry Overton Wills II and his second wife Mary Seccombe (1815–1897). There were also eleven children from Henry's first marriage to Isabella Board (1806–1843). Frank's father was one of the owners of the W.D. & H.O. Wills tobacco company, which became the largest tobacco importer and manufacturer of tobacco products in late 19th-century Britain. Frank had several brothers who followed their father into the family tobacco business, but he was drawn instead to a technical career.
