Georg Eder
Georg Eder (6 March 1928 – 19 September 2015) was an Austrian Roman Catholic bishop. Because of his strict conservatism, reported one obituary, he was frequently the center of public controversy. Eder was born in Mattsee and ordained a priest on 15 July 1956. He served the diocese of Salzburg throughout his career. Even before becoming archbishop he regularly wrote letters to newspaper editors expressing his conservative views. He was chosen to be Archbishop of Salzburg becoming on 21 December 1988, and following papal approval was consecrated on 26 February 1989 by his predecessor Karl Berg. That year he said AIDS was "a punishment from God for unnatural sexual behavior"; he opposed abortion even in cases of rape, reporting he had read that it rarely results in conception. He also opposed sex education programs. Mattsee
Mattsee is a market town at the eponymous lake in the district of Salzburg-Umgebung in the Austrian state of Salzburg. History About 765 Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria established the Mattsee Benedictine Abbey, which became a part of the Diocese of Passau in 993 and was transformed into a college of canons. The Bishops of Passau had the Mattsee Castle built in the 12th century. Under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Salzburg since 1807, the college still exists today. The abbey church, a Gothic building, has a rich Baroque equipment and a prominent 60m/197 ft high steeple added in 1766. Adjacent is a museum showing paintings of Johann Michael Rottmayr, an astronomical clock and an 860 grant deed by King Louis the German. Karl Berg
Karl Berg (27 December 1908 – 1 September 1997) was an Austrian Catholic cleric and Archbishop of Salzburg from 1973 to 1988. Life Berg was born on 27 December 1908 in the Austrian town of Radstadt. He was ordained into priesthood on 29 October 1933. Following his selection as Archbishop of Salzburg in 1972, he was confirmed on 9 January 1973. He held the post until his retirement on 5 September 1988. From 1985 to 1988, he was president of the Austrian Bishops' Conference. He died on 1 September 1997. Kaprun Disaster
The Kaprun disaster was a fire that occurred in an ascending train in the tunnel of the Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 funicular in Kaprun, Austria, on 11 November 2000. The disaster killed 155 people (150 on the ascending train, two on the descending train and three in the mountain station). There were 12 survivors (10 Germans and two Austrians) from the burning ascending train. Most of the victims were skiers on their way to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Train The Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 was a funicular railway running from Kaprun to the Kitzsteinhorn, which opened in 1974. In 1993, it was modernized.
