Geoff Virgo
Geoffrey Thomas Virgo (9 November 1918 – 5 January 2001) was an Australian politician. Political career From 2 March 1968 to 29 May 1970 he represented the electoral district of Edwardstown in the South Australian House of Assembly as a member of the Labor Party. The district of Edwardstown was abolished in May 1970 after a Boundary Redistribution. From 30 May 1970 to 14 September 1979 he represented the electoral district of Ascot Park in the South Australian House of Assembly as a member of the Australian Labor Party. Virgo was the Minister of Roads and Transport from 2 June 1970 until 19 April 1973. Virgo was also the Minister of Local Government from 2 June 1970 through 15 March 1979. On 19 April 1973 the Ministry of Roads and Transport was abolished and Virgo became the Minister of Transport through 18 September 1979. Edwardstown, South Australia
Edwardstown is an inner southern-western suburb located 6 km southwest of Adelaide in the City of Marion. In 1989 the suburb of Edwardstown was split, with the portion east of South Road becoming Melrose Park. This occurred as the suburb was quite large, located on either side of South Road and was in the jurisdiction of two local government councils, with the larger western side belonging to the City of Marion. Edwardstown is in the South Australian House of Assembly districts of Badcoe and Elder, and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Boothby. Edwardstown is home to the Castle Plaza Shopping Centre. Edwardstown is served by the Woodlands Park and Edwardstown railway stations. The current suburb of Edwardstown includes localities previously known as Hammersmith, Woodlands Park, St Mary's West, Ackland Gardens and Mirreen. The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Cities was an Australian Public Service department of the Government of Australia that existed between December 2017 and May 2019, charged with the responsibility for infrastructure and major projects, transport, local government, external territories administration, rural and regional development, population policy, and cities. 1979 South Australian State Election
State elections were held in South Australia on 15 September 1979. All 47 seats in the South Australian House of Assembly were up for election. The incumbent Australian Labor Party led by Premier of South Australia Des Corcoran was defeated by the Liberal Party of Australia led by Leader of the Opposition David Tonkin. The Liberals originally won 25 seats, but a court decision overturned their win in Norwood. Labor won the Norwood by-election, which meant the Liberals held 24 seats, with Labor on 20 seats, and 1 each to the Australian Democrats, National Country Party, and an Independent Labor. Background Premier Don Dunstan abruptly resigned as premier on 15 February 1979, due to ill health, and was succeeded by Deputy Premier Des Corcoran. Dunstan also resigned from parliament, and his seat was retained for Labor by Greg Crafter at the by-election in March 1979.
