Career Pope works as a management consultant in the voluntary sector and was a councillor in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, where he was Mayor in 1989–1990 and chair of Social Services. He took his seat on the London Assembly on 6 June 2005 replacing Lynne Featherstone who stepped down in order to concentrate on her work as a newly elected MP. Pope lost his seat at the 2008 election. In May 2006, he became chair of the London Assembly's Transport Committee. London Assembly
The London Assembly is a 25-member elected body, part of the Greater London Authority, that scrutinises the activities of the Mayor of London and has the power, with a two-thirds super-majority, to amend the Mayor's annual budget and to reject the Mayor's draft statutory strategies. The London Assembly was established in 2000. It is also able to investigate other issues of importance to Londoners (most notably Transport for London, transport or Natural environment, environmental matters), publish its findings and recommendations, as well as make proposals to the Mayor. Lynne Choona Featherstone, Baroness Featherstone, (''née'' Ryness; born 20 December 1951) is a British politician, businesswoman and Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. Prior to entering politics, Featherstone was a successful businesswoman owning and running a London design company. She was also a director of the Ryness chain of lighting and electrical shops. A Member of the London Assembly (MLA) from 2000 to 2005, she was Member of Parliament (MP) for Hornsey and Wood Green between 2005 and 2015, before being nominated for a peerage in the Dissolution Peerages List 2015. Caroline Valerie Pidgeon (born 29 September 1972) is a British politician serving as the Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the London Assembly since 2018, and a Londonwide Member of the London Assembly (AM) since 2008. Early life and education Pidgeon was born in Eastleigh, Hampshire, on 29 September 1972, to Eric and Valerie Pidgeon. She grew up in the county, and was the first member of her family to go to university, graduating from Aberystwyth University with a degree in Economics in 1994. After university, Pidgeon moved to London. Career From 1994 to 1996, Pidgeon was a political researcher for Rose Colley, a councillor on Southwark London Borough Council. Pidgeon was also a political researcher at Brent Council from 1996 to 1999. The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames () in southwest London forms part of Outer London and is the only London borough on both sides of the River Thames. It was created in 1965 when three smaller council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. 2008 London Assembly Election
An election to the Assembly of London took place on 1 May 2008, along with the 2008 London mayoral election. The Conservatives gained 2 seats, Labour gained one seat, the Liberal Democrats lost two seats, and UKIP were wiped out. Notably, a candidate for the British National Party (BNP) was elected for the first time. The Assembly is elected by the Additional Member System. Fourteen directly elected constituencies exist, all of which have, to date, only ever been won by the Conservative Party or the Labour Party. An additional eleven members are allocated by a London wide top-up vote with the proviso that parties must win at least five percent of the vote to qualify for the list seats.
