Geoff Holloway
Geoff Holloway is an Australian sociologist, author, poet, conservationist and political activist. He is a sociologist, as well as activist within the United Tasmania Group in its earlier iteration, and later. He was one of the individuals present at the meeting that adopted the change of name, while retaining the same focuses, of the South West Tasmania Action Committee to the Tasmanian Wilderness Society in 1976. He is also author of works about conservation and environment groups in Tasmania. As UTG secretary from 2018 up until 2020, he also has expressed views that reflect upon earlier environmental issues, such as the Lake Pedder Lake Pedder, once a glacial outwash lake, is a man-made impoundment and diversion lake located in the southwest of Tasmania, Australia. A bracket is either of two tall fore- or back-facing punctuation marks commonly used to isolate a segment of text or data from its surroundings. United Tasmania Group
The United Tasmania Group (UTG) is generally acknowledged as the world's first Green party to contest elections. The party was formed on 23 March 1972, during a meeting of the Lake Pedder Action Committee (LPAC) at the Hobart Town Hall in order to field political candidates in the April 1972 state election. 1970s UTG contested ten state and federal elections between 1972 and 1977, with the highest vote of 9.9% in the Legislative Council election with Rod Broadby in 1975 (see Appendix 4, UTG Journal Issue No. 6, 2021). The United Tasmania Group's first President was Dr Richard Jones and it lasted for five years, briefly reforming in 1990 for the federal election. South West Tasmania Action Committee
South West Tasmania Action Committee was a group started after the flooding of the lake in South West Tasmania known as Lake Pedder to create the Gordon Dam catchment. It developed into an Australia wide organisation. In 1976 it evolved into the Tasmanian Wilderness Society. Tasmanian Wilderness Society
The Tasmanian Wilderness Society was a Tasmanian environmental group that started in 1976 in response to a proposal by the state's Hydro Electric Commission to construct a dam on the Gordon River, downstream from the Franklin River, that led to the Franklin Dam controversy. The group evolved from membership of the South West Tasmania Action Committee and members of the United Tasmania Group. It was active in public protest about the issues of Wilderness, the Franklin River and South West Tasmania. Lake Pedder
Lake Pedder, once a glacial outwash lake, is a man-made impoundment and diversion lake located in the southwest of Tasmania, Australia. In addition to its natural catchment from the Frankland Range, the lake is formed by the 1972 damming of the Serpentine and Huon rivers by the Hydro Electric Commission of Tasmania for the purposes of hydroelectric power generation. As a result, the flooded Lake Pedder now has a surface area of approximately , making it Tasmania's second largest lake. The original and modified lake In early 20th century the original lake was named after Sir John Pedder, the first Chief Justice of Tasmania. The name of the original lake was officially transferred to the new man-made impoundment.
