Gennady Olonkin
Gennady Nikitich Olonkin (russian: Геннадий Никитич Олонкин, no, Gennadij Nikititsj Olonkin) (1898-September 1960) was a Russian-Norwegian polar explorer, telegraphist and radio operator. Biography Gennady Nikitich Olonkin was born in the Arkhangelsk Governorate of the Russian Empire. Olonkin was the only son among twelve children of a Norwegian mother and a Russian father. From 1918 to 1925, he was a telegraph and radio operator as well as mechanic on the polar ship '' Maud'', led by Roald Amundsen. In 1926, Olonkin took part in the first part of the Amundsen-Ellsworth 1926 Transpolar Flight with the airship ''Norge'' from Rome to Svalbard providing radio contact with the different ground control stations. In 1926 he was honored as a Knight of the Order of St. Olav. Olonkin acquired Norwegian citizenship and worked at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Jan Mayen () is a Norwegian volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean with no permanent population. It is long (southwest-northeast) and in area, partly covered by glaciers (an area of around the Beerenberg volcano). It has two parts: larger northeast Nord-Jan and smaller Sør-Jan, linked by a wide isthmus. It lies northeast of Iceland (495 km 05 miNE of Kolbeinsey), east of central Greenland, and west of the North Cape, Norway. Olonkinbyen
Olonkinbyen (literally ''The Olonkin Town'') is the only settlement on the Norway, Norwegian island of Jan Mayen (aside from isolated cottage huts such as Puppebu). It was named after Russian-Norwegian explorer Gennady Olonkin. The only inhabitants on the island are the 18 personnel, 14 working for the Norwegian Armed Forces and 4 for the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Olonkinbyen houses the staff that operate the meteorological observation station, Loran-C station, Jan Mayensfield air field and other infrastructure. The meteorological observation service staff are responsible for the radiosonde releases and synoptic weather observations. The crew of the meteorological station is engaged for six months at a time.
