Horace Sewell
Brigadier-General Horace Somerville Sewell (1881–1953) was an officer in the British Army during World War I, notable for his mixed-race ancestry. Biography Horace Sewell was born in Wales on 10 February 1881; he was the third son of Henry Sewell, who was in turn the eldest son of the prominent Jamaica planter William Sewell and the mulatto former slave Mary McCrea. Henry Sewell returned to England, where he married and eventually settled at Steephill Castle near Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, but he inherited his father's Jamaica plantation "empire" in 1872, and subsequently divided his time between England and Jamaica, eventually relocating permanently back to the island. Horace Sewell was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge, Trinity College, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, before joining the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards in 1900. Timothy Toyne Sewell
Major-General Timothy Patrick Toyne Sewell DL (born 7 July 1941) is a former British Army officer who became Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Military career Educated at Bedford School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Toyne Sewell was commissioned into the King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1961.Debrett's People of Today 1994 He was appointed Commanding Officer of 1st Bn King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1981, Chief of Staff for British Forces in the Falkland Islands 1983 and Commander 19th Infantry Brigade in 1985. He went on to be Commander of the British Military Advisory and Training Team in Zimbabwe in 1989 and Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1991 before resigning in 1994. In retirement he became Director of Goodenough College in London and then Chairman of UWC. William Henry Sewell
General Sir William Henry Sewell, (c.1786 – 13 March 1862) was a senior officer in the British Army. Sewell was of unclear parentage, and according to some reports, was an illegitimate son of the Prince Regent (later George IV). He was raised however by Robert Sewell and his wife Sarah. He was educated at Westminster School and Eton College under the name of W.H. Robertson and joined the British Army in 1806 as an ensign in the 96th Foot under the name of William Henry Sewell. He then exchanged to the 16th Light Dragoons and rose through the ranks, via different regiments, to be Lieutenant-Colonel of the 6th Foot in 1817. He was appointed aide-de-camp to General Beresford, going with him in 1808 to the Peninsular War. He was present with Sir John Moore's army at Corunna, Talavera, Busaco, Nivelle, Nive, Bayonne, Orthes, Toulouse and the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, as well as several other minor engagements.
