General López Department
The General López Department (in Spanish, ''Departamento General López'') is an administrative subdivision (''departamento'') of the province of Santa Fe, Argentina. It is located in the south of the province. Its head town is Melincué (population 2,200), and its largest city is Venado Tuerto (population 70,000). It is bordered by the Caseros Department in the north, and by the Constitución Department in the north-east; the rest of its borders coincide with interprovincial limits (with Córdoba in the west and with Buenos Aires in the south and east). Departments Of Argentina
Departments ( es, departamentos) form the second level of administrative division (below the provinces), and are subdivided in municipalities. They are extended in all of Argentina except for the Province of Buenos Aires and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, the national capital, each of which has different administrative arrangements (respectively ''partidos'' and ''comunas''). Except in La Rioja, Mendoza, and San Juan Provinces, departments have no executive authorities or assemblies of their own. A wheelwright is a craftsman who builds or repairs wooden wheels. The word is the combination of "wheel" and the word "wright", (which comes from the Old English word "''wryhta''", meaning a worker or shaper of wood) as in shipwright and arkwright. Murphy, Santa Fe
Murphy is a town in the General López Department of the Santa Fe Province, Argentina. It is named after an Irishman, John James Murphy, from Haysland, near Kilrane, County Wexford, close to Rosslare Harbour. Born in 1822 into a Catholic family, Murphy was an unmarried son of middle-class tenant farmers, who decided to emigrate to better his prospects. He sailed to Buenos Aires then headed to the pampas to find farm work. Murphy initially found employment digging boundary ditches to separate neighbouring sheep farms, became a tenant sheep farmer, then acquired land of his own in the Salto area. He expanded his holdings and later acquired huge tracts of land in the vicinity of Rojas, Buenos Aires and later in Santa Fe Province. By the time of his death in 1909 he was hugely wealthy. Firmat is a city located in the south of Santa Fe Province of Argentina in the Departamento General López. The main economic activities are agro-industry and agriculture. Venado Tuerto () (Spanish for ''One Eyed Deer'') is a city in the south-west of the , 322 km from the provincial capital. It has about 76,000 inhabitants (). History Venado Tuerto was founded on April 26, 1884 by Eduardo Casey, born in Lobos, Buenos Aires, in 1847. He was the son of two Irish immigrants who had amassed considerable wealth. Casey bought a large extension of land from where the natives had been recently expelled, to be employed for farming and horse breeding. The name of the town literally means ''one-eyed deer'', and its origin is unknown, though several folk legends circulate around it.
